Notes for Law and order in Mesopotamia:
"cuneiform law." Encyclopædia Britannica. 2009. Encyclopædia Britannica


Cuneiform law the first written language

Invented by Sumerians and passed on to future Mesopotamian societies
like the Assyrians ect

Ancient law of this sort nearly all the time contains a epilogue and a
prologue

The codes do not treat all the rules in areas of crime but instead treat
questioned rules leaving some large areas to known tradition embedded
deep in the culture

The collections of codes focused on individual acts of crime which were
disputed at the time for most of the punishments and crimes were well
known

The most ancient legislation is known as Ur-Nammu after the city of Ur It
dealt with witchcraft flight of slaves and bodily damage

The earlyiest Sumerian law is known as the code of Lipit-Ishtar which
dealt with marriage successions penalties property and contracts while
introducing the prologue and epilogue style.

The best known and main record of Babylonian law is the Code of
Hammurabi which was published on a large stone monument and at the
top has an engraving of the god of justice

 The code of Hammurabi deals extensively with penal law the law of
persons family law and price lists

It was used as some of the first Greek laws and is renowned for its
significance to moderen law
The laws of Assyria, though created later than the Babylonian laws, summon up
the image of a less-developed society. The existing tablets, dating from the 15th
to the 13th century BC (before the rise of the Assyrian empire), deal with
personal property, landed property, and women and families. The laws reflect a
society that was patriarchal and rather strict.

Why does the societies regress after advancing so much?

Is it because of Assyria’s imperialistic and violent base for a society?

University Research Extension Co., 1901), Vol. III: The Roman World, pp. 911.

These laws of the Hitties peoples called the code of nesilim are similar
to Hamurabbis code but they are slightly more forgiving and less
focused on killing or tourture

These laws have more of a foucus on fines but still rely heavily on the
class system


The code of Ur-Nammu was a collection of simple sentences with a
If person X does this to person Y then this will happen to person X
with no prologue or epilogue

The Code of Ur-Nammu is the first legal legislation ever written and
would pace the way for future codes in its language and concept

Concept being actually writing this down and not totally relying on
the deep heald beliefs and traditions to use as punishment for each
crime


The Sumerians were quite peaceful people compared to many of their
counterparts

They were more or less the first huge civilization yet were a bit more
peaceful so their laws were somewhat less extreme

Sumerian code was used as the template for Hammurabi’s code
Scanned by: J. S. Arkenberg, Dept. of History, Cal. State Fullerton. Prof.
Arkenberg has modernized the text.

The Assyrians utilize more barbaric and crude methods of punishment
and conviction

 The Assyrians also made their own code which is similar to
Hammurabi’s code
