Numeracy Games to Play at Home Games to play with a DECK OF CARDS: GO TEN (like “Go Fish”) – Deal 5 cards to each player. Place the rest of the cards facedown in a messy pile. Players take turns asking opponents for a match. In this case, a match is when you have 2 cards that have a sum of 10. HEADBANDS Addition, Subtraction, or Multiplication. Play with 3 players. One player is the “Caller”. The other 2 players place a card on their foreheads without peeking. The Caller says the sum, difference, or product of the 2 cards. Each player needs to determine what card is on his or her forehead based on the Caller’s information. MEMORY – Lay all the cards face down. Flip over 2 cards. A match is when you have 2 cards that have a sum of 10. If you have a match, you get another turn. If it’s not a match, return your cards to their original spot facedown. Multiplication, Addition, or Subtraction SNAP – Divide your deck in half. Each player puts their pile of cards facedown. Each player flips top card at same time. Whoever calls out the sum/difference/product first gets the 2 cards to add to their pile. (Challenge: Play Addition Snap with more than 2 players) Addition, Subtraction or Multiplication WAR – Divide the stack of cards in half. Each player flips over 2 of their cards and states the sum, difference, or product of their 2 cards. Whoever has the greater sum, smallest difference, or greatest product collects both players’ cards and adds them to their stack. If players have the same answer, then a war happens: each player places 2 cards facedown, then flips over 2 more cards to add, subtract, or multiply. Now whoever has the greater answer gets to take all of the cards. WHO CAN BUILD THE GREATEST NUMBER? Each player flips 4 cards quickly. Make the biggest number that you can make, and say, with those cards. Whoever has the biggest number gets all 8 cards. Continue and keep track if you like. For example if you roll a 4, you shout 8. ROCK & ROLL DOUBLES PLUS ONE – Roll a dice and shout it’s double. For example if you roll a 4, you shout 9. This involves recall of facts, specifically doubles, as well as mental math. VARIATIONS TO ROCK & ROLL – Doubles less one, double plus 2, doubles less 2 SNAP – Addition, Multiplication – similar to flipping two cards over, with a partner and two die, be the first to determine the sum or product of the two numbers rolled. Games to play with a DOMINOES: COLLECT A SUM – From a pile of dominoes, being the first to find a dominoe whose sum is… VARIATIONS…find a dominoe whose difference is ___ …whose product is… WHAT’S UNDER MY THUMB?: Choose a dominoe without your partner seeing. Determine the sum and then cover one side of the dominoe. Say to your partner, “The sum is 7, what’s under my thumb?” VARIATION: Choose two dominoes without your partner seeing. Determine the sum of both dominoes. Flip one up, and turn the other down and say to your partner, “Together the sum is 18. What’s the sum of the turned down dominoe?” …FURTHER VARIATION “How might that look?” ONE MORE, ONE LESS TRAIN – Starting with one dominoe in the middle, add to each end, the number that is either one more or one less than the side you’re attaching to. For example, if the starting dominoe is a double four, then someone could place a dominoe that has either a three or a five at one end. VARIATION TO TRAINS – Two more or two less…Making 10’s (if one end of the starting dominoe has six dots, then you need to attach a 4 to it).
