A DAY IN THE LIFE OF SARAH DECOSSARD ’17
Name: Sarah Decossard
Year: Freshman
Major: Visual Art
Day or Boarding: Boarding Student from Stamford, Connecticut
One fun fact about me: I love sugar! I honestly cannot go a day without a snack of nutella and
pretzels. Also, the school does a great job of giving us little sugary treats after meals.
Favorite place on campus: The common room in my dorm
Favorite arts class at Walnut Hill: Painting
Favorite academic class at Walnut Hill: Geometry With Ms. Chaffee
One more thing I’d like to share: I have never met a more caring and accepting group of people
than that of the Walnut Hill community. The faculty and staff here are always there to support you
and truly do want to see you reach your full potential. Also, you can always count on your fellow
students to be there cheering you on during a performance or showcase.
DAY:
8:00AM
French 2: Madame Areseneau
never fails to wake you up in the
morning with her fun and energetic
class. The language classes here
can sometimes get rough since they
are full immersion, but I’ve found
that my speaking has improved
drastically with this teaching style.
9:30AM
World History 1: Mr. Buttermore’s World History class is awesome. I
love our class discussions and debates. He really gives each student
a chance to speak his or her mind on topics. Today we finished up our
Greek debate comparing and contrasting the two city-states, Athens
and Sparta.
10:20AM
Assembly: One of my many
favorite things at Walnut Hill are our
assemblies. When you first arrive
into the theater, you see a spectacular display of people laughing,
dancing, and singing along to the
background music. Then once the
assembly starts you are filled in by
teachers and students on the amazing things going on around campus
during the week.
11:40AM
Lunch: This semester, since I am only taking two academic classes
in the morning, I am given the opportunity to have two lunch blocks
free. I usually use this time to grab lunch with my friends and then get
ahead on my school/art work.
2:00PM
Sculpture: On Tuesdays, from 2:005:20pm, I have sculpture class with
Richard Schwartz. I love to build
things and work with my hands. For
this project, we’re working with plaster heads to create a sculpture based
on the prompt “decay”.
6:00PM
Fitness Center: Almost everyday I go
and do an hour-long workout in the
Fitness Center with my friends. Since
we don’t have sports, the Fitness
Center is a great way to stay active
and healthy. My favorite thing to do is
workout on the elliptical.
8:15PM
E-list: Like most majors, being Visual
Artist requires a bit of outside of
class work. What I work on changes
from night to night. Tonight, from
8:15-10:00pm, I get to work on my
self-portrait expressionist painting.
For our project we each got the
chance to choose an expressionist
painter to base our painting off of. I
chose Bernard Buffet because I love
his messy style.
