Notes 12.2 Surface Area of Prisms and Cylinders PRISM – a polyhedron with two congruent parallel faces called BASES. LATERAL FACES – the other sides of a polyhedron. LATERAL EDGES – the segments connecting the vertices SURFACE AREA – the area of all the faces. LATERAL AREA – the area of the lateral faces. NET – the two-‐dimensional representation of the faces. ← Net Formula – Surface Area of Right Prism S.A. = 2 ⋅ B + P ⋅ h B = AREA of the base P = perimeter of the base h = Height of the solid Example: Find the surface area of each solid. CYLINDER – A solid with congruent circular bases. LATERAL AREA – Area of the curved side. SURFACE AREA – area of the curved side and the two circular bases. Formula Surface Area of Cylinder S.A. = 2 ⋅ π r 2 + 2π rh Examples: Find the surface area of each cylinder. Given the S.A. = 864 cm2, find the value of x.
