8. Please provide a summary of the requested changes.
We are proposing dropping the number of required courses in order to focus History Ed. students
on higher level thinking that is found in the upper division courses.

9. Please provide a concise, yet comprehensive, statement that explains the reasons for requesting
the change. Include documentation or assessment information supporting the specific request (if possible).
By lowering the number of required courses we believe that more students will become History
Ed. Majors. This also works well with the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation
(CAEP) standards and the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) standards by focusing
students in courses that press for higher level thinking and higher level written communication
skills. Dr. Bryan Duke had suggested that I contact Dr. Kathy Brown to review the above
changes. Dr. Kathy Brown has reviewed these changes and suggested a few minor modifications
to the program including: replacing IMW 3312 Technology for Teachers with ESL 4232 Teaching
Secondary English Language Learners; Adding ‘OR’ in the advanced history sections in order to
force students to diversify their course selection thereby increasing their general history
knowledge and better preparing them to pass both OSAT 17 and OSAT 18 as well as being
better prepared for the 6-12 classroom. As per the view of the History Education Advisory Panel,
SOC 2103, sociology, has been added to the Major Core Course section. This serves the dual
purpose of preparing students to teach sociology but it also puts UCO in compliance with NCSS
requirements. I have notified Dr. David Ford, Chair of Sociology about the change and received
his verbal approval.
