Pollution
• Pollution is the contamination of
environment with substances that
have a harmful effect on it.
• The term pollution refers primarily

Did You Know?
• Pollution is continuously changing the
colour of the marble frontal of Taj Mahal,
one of the seven wonders of the modern
world, to yellow
• Almost 80% of Indian sewage flows
untreated into river Ganga
• There are more than 500 million cars in the
world and by 2030 the number will rise to 1
billion, almost doubling the pollution level
• Around 1000 children die in India every
year due to diseases caused from polluted
water

Pollutants
• Pollutants are substances that have
harmful effects on the environment
• On the basis of their form, they can be
classified as follows:
• Primary pollutants: These are directly
released from the source. E.g.. Carbon
dioxide emissions
• Secondary pollutants: These form
when primary pollutants react in the
atmosphere. E.g.. Sulphuric Acid,
Ozone, etc.

Types of Pollution
Water Pollution : Sewage, industrial
wastes
Air Pollution: Ozone, nitrogen dioxide,
sulphur oxides
Noise Pollution: Industries, automobiles
Soil Pollution: Pesticides, herbicides,
polythene bags
Thermal Pollution: Waste from steel
industries, power plants

Effects
Pollution is never just someone else’s problem. Most of all it affects
children, pregnant women, and people with heart and respiratory
diseases. Here are some of its effects:
• Air pollutants such as ozone contribute to
climate change
• Air pollution causes appendicitis, asthma,
increase in blood pressure, breast cancer,
etc.
• Lead, cadmium are consumed by insects
disrupts the entire food chain as it is
consumed by other animals
• Oil spills are harmful to aquatic animals like
fish

Preventive Measures –
Protecting Oneself
• Avoid exercising outdoors when
pollution levels are high.
• Eat in clean places. Consume foods
that are high in antioxidants.
• If you have breathing problems, stay
away from friends and family when
they smoke.

Items Needed: NIL
Form Groups : Divide yourselves into groups of five for the activity. - 5 minutes
Activity : Pollution
Initial Demonstration: 10 minutes
Each group selects two volunteers and a leader to coordinate the activity. The leader will choose a
topic, which will be a type of pollution, for his group. One volunteer suggests a way to protect oneself,
and the other, a way to protect the environment from the type of pollution. Rest of the group
members observe.
Group Feedback: 5 minutes
The observers in the group give feedback to the volunteers about their suggested methods.
Repeat Demonstration: 5 minutes
Another set of volunteers in each group will repeat the same exercise.
