GEOMETRY SPECIAL SEGMENT CONSTRUCTION PROJECT
Using a compass and straight edge (ruler) you will construct the angle bisectors, perpendicular bisectors, altitudes,
and medians for 4 different triangles. The purpose of this project is for you to have a better understanding of
the properties of each of these constructions as well as the location of the points of concurrency.
Project Directions
1. You will make all 4 compass constructions (perpendicular bisector, median, altitude, and angle bisectors) in
each of the 4 triangles
2. Construct the 3 medians, 3 altitudes, 3 perpendicular bisectors, and 3 angle bisector for each type of
triangle
3. All construction marks should be left on the paper.
4. All Points of concurrency clearly marked and labeled. (for each triangle)
5. All congruent segments and congruent angles should be clearly marked as well as any right angles.
6. For each triangle, in complete sentences: (to be hand written in the “Description” section of the template)
 classify the triangle by angles and sides,
 name the points of concurrency of the medians, altitudes, perpendicular bisectors, and angle
bisectors as well as describe the location of the intersection (inside, on, or outside the triangle)
7. Project should be neat, accurate, and organized. All lines should be drawn with a ruler, and the vertices of
the triangles should be labeled.
8. Once project is completed answer the following questions: (write answers on attached rubric sheet)
1. The angles bisector of a triangle is (sometimes, always, or never) the perpendicular bisector.
2. The median of the triangle is (sometimes, always, or never) the perpendicular bisector.
3. The altitude of the triangle is (sometimes, always, or never) the perpendicular bisector.
4. The centroid of a triangle is (sometimes, always, or never) the circumcenter of the triangle.
5. The altitude from any vertex of an equilateral triangle is (sometimes, always, or never) the
median.
6. The median of any side of an equilateral triangle is (sometimes, always, or never) the angle
bisector.
7. The altitude of a triangle is (sometimes, always, or never) the angle bisector of a triangle
8. The incenter of a triangle is (sometimes, always, or never) the centroid of a triangle.
DUE DATE: Friday, January 31, 2014
Medians
Construct the 3 medians per triangle.
 What is the point of concurrency called? ________________ ____ Label it M.
 Measure the distances created by the point of concurrency to the midpoints and vertices.
 What conclusion can be made about the distances?
Angle Bisectors
Construct the 3 angle bisectors per triangle.
 What is the point of concurrency called? ________________ ____ Label it B.
 Create the inscribed circles in each triangle using the point of concurrency as the center.
 Measure the distances created by the point of concurrency to the sides of the triangles.
 What conclusion can be made about the distances?
Perpendicular Bisectors
Construct the 3 perpendicular bisectors per triangle.
 What is the point of concurrency called? ________________ ____ Label it P.
 Create the circumscribed circles for each triangle.
 Measure the distances created by the point of concurrency to the vertices.
 What conclusion can be made about the distances? _______________________________
 For which type of triangle is the point of concurrency outside the triangle? _____________,
inside the triangle? ________________, on the triangle? ________________
Classify the triangles below by measuring the angles.
Altitudes
Construct the 3 altitudes per triangle.
 What is the point of concurrency called? ________________ ____ Label it A.
 For which type of triangle is the point of concurrency outside the triangle? _____________,
inside the triangle? ________________, on the triangle? ________________
