April 27, 2011 1) Write your homework in your agenda: Homework and Practice 11-3 2) Open your agenda to your behavior card. 3) Turn in your FLATLAND project. Be sure to include the rough draft, rubric, checklist, and the final copy. 4) Take out some loose leaf paper. Set up for Cornell Notes and vocabulary acquisition. Coordinate Plane Ordered pairs are just PLANE fun!! What am I Learning Today? Graphing on a Coordinate Plane How will I show that I learned it? Correctly identify the quadrants in which a point lies Locate and graph ordered pairs on the coordinate plane Vocabulary • Coordinate plane: Formed by two number lines in a plane that intersect at right angles. • Axes: Two number lines in a coordinate plane. X-axis is horizontal and y-axis is vertical. • Quadrants: The four sections created by the intersection of the axes. • Ordered pairs: Gives the location of a point on a coordinate plane. • Coordinate: The numbers in an ordered pair. Questions What does an ordered pair tell you? What is the ordered pair of the origin? Answers The first number tells how far to move right (positive) or left (negative) from the origin. The second number tells how far to move up (positive) or down (negative). (0,0) II What are the characteristics of the quadrants? How are the quadrants labeled? Quadrant Quadrant Quadrant Quadrant I: (+, +) II: (-, +) III: (-, -) IV: (+, -) - + I + X III - IV Counterclockwise starting in the upper right hand corner A coordinate plane is formed by two number lines in a plane that intersect at right angles. The point of intersection is the zero on each number line. • The horizontal axis is called the x-axis. • The vertical axis is called the y-axis. • The point where the axes intersect is called the origin. Identifying Quadrants Name the quadrant where each point is located. A. X Quadrant IV B. Y Quadrant III C. S Quadrant II Naming Points on a Coordinate Plane Give the coordinates of each point. X (4, –1) From the origin, X is 4 units right and 1 unit down. Z (0, 4) From the origin, Z is 0 units right, and 4 units up. Y (–2, –3) From the origin, Y is 2 units left, and 3 units down. Graphing Points on a Coordinate Plane Graph each point on a coordinate plane. Z (0, -4) y From the origin, move 4 units down. T (1, –3) From the origin, move 1 unit right, and 3 units down. 4 2 x –4 –2 0 2 –2 –4 T Z 4 Now Try This Name the quadrant where each ordered pair is located. 1. (3, –5) IV 2. (–4, –2) III 3. (6, 2) I 4. (–7, 9) II Give the coordinates of each point. 5. A (–2, 3) 6. B (1, 2) 7. C (0, –2) 8. D (–2, –3) http://www.funbrain.com/co/index.html
