Study Guide for C4 Lesson 3
Know the seven major plates: Pacific, North American, South American, Africa, Eurasia, IndoAustralian, Antarctic
Know what plate we live on: North America.
Know which plates were joined and separated: South America + Africa, North America and
Eurasia, Antarctica + Indo-Australian
Know what 2 landmasses collided to create mountains: India + Asia = Himalaya mountains
Know that Earth’s plates meet at BOUNDARIES.
Breaks in the Earth’s crust are called FAULTS.
Know the three types of boundaries and what occurs:
1. Divergent – plates pull apart
A. Can happen in ocean at mid-ocean ridge.
B. Can happen on land – creates a RIFT VALLEY
2. Convergent – plates move towards each other
A. Can cause mountains when 2 continental plates meet.
B. When 2 oceans meet, denser one gets subducted.
C. When land and ocean meet, ocean goes down and can cause volcanoes.
3. Transform – 2 plates slide past each other = EARTHQUAKES (Ex. San Andreas fault)
Plates motion is SLOW and CONSTANT
Convection currents make plates move.
Gravity pulls denser plates into the mantle.
Know where the Ring of Fire is – on the edges of the Pacific Plate
Bonus: Know which 4 plates meet at the mid-ocean ridge.
