Plate Boundaries Plate Boundaries • Definition: The edges of plates that meet at a line. • There are three types of boundaries: • Transform • Divergent • Convergent Transform Boundary • Place where two plates SLIDE past each other moving in opposite directions. • At this boundary, Earthquakes occur frequently. • When two plates SLIDE! Real Life Example: Divergent Boundary • When two plates move apart or diverge. • When two plates SEPARATE. • Geographic examples: • Mid-Ocean Ridges (ocean-ocean) • Rift Valley’s (continental-continental) Real Life Example: • Oceanic-Oceanic • Mid Atlantic Ridge • North American Plate- Eurasian Plate • South American Plate- African Plate • Crease a mid-ocean ridge where new crust forms. Real Life Example: • Continental-Continental • African Rift Valley • African Plate and Arabian Plate • Create a huge rift valley! Convergent Boundary • Place where two plates come together, or converge. • When two plates COLLIDE. • Create Subduction Zones • Geographic examples: • Mountains (continental-continental) • Trenches and Volcano Mountains (continental-oceanic) • Trenches and Island Arcs (oceanic-oceanic) Real Life Example: • Continental- Continental • The Himalayan Mountains • Eurasian Plate and Indian Plate • Create Huge folded mountains! Real Life Example: • Continental-Oceanic • The Cascade Mountain Range • Juan de Fuca Plate and the North American Plate • Pacific Plate and Gorda Plate • Create a line of volcanic mountains Real Life Example: • Oceanic-Oceanic • Caribbean Island Arc • Caribbean Plate and South American Plate • Creates a line of Islands Left Side: • 1st Row: On each of the three tabs • Front Side: Label the three types of boundaries. • Back Side: Identify the different types of that boundary (example: ocean-ocean). Left Side: • 2nd Row: • Front Side: Use ONE word to describe the movement of that boundary. • Back Side: What type of geological features form at that boundary? Left Side: • 3rd Row: • Front Side: Draw a picture/Diagram of the plate boundary/movement • Back Side: Give the different real life examples of that boundary.
