Many different theories exist regarding
the different types of communication but
generally there are three types of
communication:
Verbal – communication using
words, includes oral and written
Nonverbal – communication using
gestures and facial expressions
Visual – communication using visuals
such as charts, graphs or pictures

The most effective communication
includes a combination of one or more
of the previous communication types.
 Each type alone leads to a distortion of
the intended message.
 The measure of how effective the
communication is in how well the
sender’s message was received by the
audience. This is done through
feedback.


Corporate Message Assignment #1 - Students should each
think of 3 commercials for products or services . They will
report on what the message is and how verbal (oral and
written), nonverbal, and visual communication is used to
promote the product or service.
Communication Process Assignment #2 - Students will create
a particular message they would like to convey and use
software such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Inspiration, or
Visio to create a flowchart demonstrating the
Communication Process. Each shape should contain the
name of the step as well as an example of each step that
corresponds to the student’s message
