Egypt
• Egyptian civilization developed
on the banks of the Nile River
in North Africa.
• The Nile is the world’s
longest river.
Egypt
• The land near the river is
rich, and dark, perfect for
growing crops. The land
away from the river has large
deserts and mountains.
Egypt
• Egyptians were protected from
attacks by the Nile and the
mountains.
• The Egyptians also built dams and
irrigation systems to control the
flood waters of the Nile
Egypt
• The Egyptians were ruled by
Pharaohs (kings).
• Egyptians believed that the
Pharaohs were really gods in
human form.
Egypt
• The Pharaoh created all the laws,
had all the political and power, and
supervised building projects.
• Pyramids: Large tombs that
provided Pharaohs with an eternal
resting place.
Egypt
• The Egyptians believed in an
afterlife (life after death).
They would bury the Pharaoh
with everything he/she might
need in the afterlife.
Egypt
• When a Pharaoh dies they
washed the body, removed all
bodily organs and put them in
jars, removed the brain through
the nose, salted the body, and
then wrapped the body in cloth.
Egypt
• They then placed the
body in a decorated coffin
and put it in the pyramid.
Egypt
• There were three social classes in
Egypt
• Upper Class: Royalty, Priests
• Middle Class: Scribes, merchants
• Lower Class: Poor, slaves
