POMPTON LAKES HIGH SCHOOL MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT GEOMETRY 2015-2016 Instructor: Email: Phone: Mr. Michael Cemelli [email protected] 973-835-7100 Course Description This course is a college preparatory course in which algebraic skills are reviewed and strengthened through applications to problem-solving in geometry. Relationships among points, lines, and planes are investigated. Topics such as coordinate geometry, congruency, right triangles, trigonometry, similarity, properties of polygons, circles and three-dimensional figures are also covered. Course Content UNITS 1. Lines and Angles 2. Tringles 3. Quadrilaterals and Circles TOPICS Points, Lines, and Planes Distance and Midpoints Angle Measure Parallel Lines and Transversals Classifying Triangles Congruent Triangles Proving Congruence Polygons Parallelograms Reflections and Translations Circles, Arcs, and Chords Inscribe Angles, Secants, and Tangents 1 4. Area and Volume Areas of Parallelograms, Triangles, Trapezoids, and Rhombi Areas of Regular Polygons and Circles Three Dimensional Figures Volume of Prisms, Cylinders, Pyramids, Cones, and Spheres Student Learning Objectives 1. Students will learn all the definition and how to identify and label all geometric terms. 2. Students will be able to calculate slope and express its meaning and relationship to a rate of change of a quantity. 3. Students will compare the sides and angles of triangles to determine whether they are congruent or similar 4. Student will use their knowledge of various methods learning included Pythagorean Theorem, geometric mean, trigonometry, Law of Sines and Cosines to solve a triangle. 5. Trapezoid has only pair of parallel sides; squares and rectangles have congruent diagonals and four right angles; squares and rhombi have four congruent sides. 6. Students will be able to identify and label diameter, radius, chord, secant, tangent, and center. 7. Students will use various theorems involving chords, secants, and tangents to solve problems. 8. Students will understand that area measures the surface of a two dimensional figure and the volume shows how much a sold figure can hold. 2 Grading Grading will be according to Pompton Lakes High School guidelines. Completion of assignments, projects, attendance, punctuality, class presentations and participation are all considerations when determining the grade of a student. Points will be given for each assignment and final grades will be posted on the PLHS website for student and parents/guardians to view. Students who are in jeopardy of failing the course will be notified, along with their parents/guardians, approximately mid-school year. A+ (97 - 100) B+ (87 - 89) C+ (77 - 79) D (65 - 69) A (93 - 96) B (83 - 86) C (73 - 76) F ( < 65 ) A- (90 - 92) B- (80 - 82) C- (70 - 72) Assignments Assignment Homework* Quizzes (including take-home and open notebook) Presentations Tests/Projects Classwork/Participation Notebooks (Bonus Points!!) Point Range 3 20-50 20-60 50-100 5-15 5 (periodically) * If homework is not completed by the due date, you will be given a maximum of 5 days turn in assignments late for 50% credit. After the fifth day it will be graded as a zero. ** The will be a repair policy which will be in effect throughout the entire school year. This policy allows students to correct all take-home assignments (including quizzes) until they receive a grade they are satisfied with. 3 Attendance Students are expected to attend all classes punctually and remain until the end of the period or when dismissed. All tardiness to class, excused absents, and/or unauthorized absents will follow Pompton Lakes High School Rules and Procedure protocols. Notes: Students are expected to be on time for each class. However, if lateness cannot be avoided, please enter class with discretion towards the learning environments of your classmates. Cells phones are to be OFF during class. In case of an emergency, please speak with the teacher prior to the start of class. In addition to phones, all electronics will not be permitted for use in class unless assigned by the instructor. Please note that if observed using an electronic form of communication (texting, email, Facebook, etc.) points will be deducted for participation and device will be confiscated. Be respectful of each other’s opinions; please do not interrupt the person speaking. Participation in discussions is required of all students! 4
