Premier Chou Enlai has been described at length for the first time. Sanskrit inscriptions in
China, the bone-relics of the Buddha from the Famen

Vaiyākaraṇasiddhantabhūṣaṇam. The Vaiyākaraṇasiddhantabhuṣaṇa of Kauṇḍabhaṭṭa with the
Nirañjanī commentary by Ramyatna Shukla and
Prakāśa explanatory notes by K.V. Ramakrishnamacharyulu. Part I; Critically edited by K.V. Ramakrishnamacharyulu
Vaiyākaraṇasiddhāntabhūṣaṇa, also known as
Vaiyākaraṇabhūṣaṇa, is an authentic text in Pāṇinian
semantics. It is a commentary on the Vaiyākaraṇamatonmajjana compiled by the great grammarian Bhaṭṭoji
Dīkṣita (17th c.), and is written by KauṇḌabhaṭṭa, the
nephew of Bhaṭṭoji. The main intention is to refute the
objections raised by Naiyāyikas and Mīmāṃsakas on
various aspects of Pāṇinian semantics and to establish the
grammarians’ views on the subject. Vaiyākaraṇasiddhānta-bhūṣaṇasāra, an abridged version of the
Vaiyākaraṇa-bhūṣaṇa, also written by KauṇḌabhaṭṭa, is
the more famous text with more than ten commentaries
written on it.
Studies on Madhva’s
Viṣṇutattvanirṇaya
by Roque Mesquita
Madhva was an enigmatic personality
in the Indian intellectual world of the
early thirteenth century, not least
because he developed a new selfcontained Vedāntic System which had
no links to any existing traditions.
Viṣṇutattvanirṇaya is one of the best
and
greatest
in
length
among
Madhva’s ten works (daśaprakaraṇa-granthas). It enjoyed a
high status among the works of Madhva and most probably
belonged to his last written texts. As such it displays Madhva’s
fully developed and mature teaching. This book gives an
analytical outline of the text’s literary composition providing a
survey of the topics discussed therein and furnishing at the
same time the background of these topics. The purpose of
these studies is to draw the attention of English-speaking
scholars and students to the philosophical and theological
system of Madhva, which in close accordance with the idea of
analogia entis is intimately based on a twofold nature, namely
on the concept of svatantra and paratantra.

Gates of the Lord: The Tradition of Krishna Paintings
ed. by Madhuvanti Ghose, with essays by Amit Ambalal et al. & contributions by Emilia
Bachrach
The Pushtimarg, a Hindu sect established in India in the 15th century, possesses a unique
culture-reaching back centuries and still vital today-in which art and devotion are
deeply intertwined. This vol., illustrated with nearly 200 vivid images, offers a new, indepth look at the Pushtimarg and its rich aesthetic traditions. The authors deftly
examine how pichvais were and still are used in the seasonal and daily veneration of
Shrinathji, an aspect of Krishna as a child who is the chief deity of the temple town of
Nathdwara in Rajasthan.

Shadows of Gods: An Archive and Its Images
by Gopinath Sricandane
S10
This slim, richly illustrated coffee-table book chronicles the history of the photo archive of
the Institut Français de Pondichéry and the École française
d’Extrême-Orient. With more than 1,35,000 images, the archive is a unique resource for
visual information about South India in the second half of the twentieth century,
particularly its temple art. It is the photographic evidence from this archive that
helped solve some high-profile cases of stolen antiquities in Tamil Nadu.

Tantric Studies: Fruits of a Franco-German Project on Early Tantra
S11
ed. by Dominic Goodall et al.
The principal works that have emerged from our stimulating projecton ‘Early Tantra’ are
critical editions and translations of previously unpublished primary material, which have
begun to appear in this new series. This volume complements those publications by
gathering together some of the fruits, direct and indirect, of the wide-ranging discussions
that took place during the project’s workshops. By way of introduction, the volume opens
with an attempt by the editors to draw together our findings about the “shared ritual syntax”
of some of the earliest known works of the tantric traditions, with a particular emphasis on
the Buddhist Mañjuśriyamūlakalpa and the ›aiva Niśvāsatattvasaṃhitā.

The present volume is based on articles written by Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan over a period of
four decades.
The article in the first section, Alternate Paradigms of Knowledge, deals with
evolution of categories in the Indian context. The next article on Indriyas is concerned with the
question of the sense perceptions in the Indian tradition. In another major section, the
focus is on Śiva, Śiva as represented in architecture and sculpture and Śiva as was manifested
in a major exhibition curated by Stella Kramrisch in Philadelphia. In another section the focus
shifts from Śiva to Krishna, and similarly traces the history of the representation of Krishna
in the Indian arts through sculpture and paintings from sources ranging from the
Bhagavatapuråƒa to the multiple traditions of miniature paintings.

NARTHANG KANJUR 100 Volumes - size 37×24 cm. (101 Bindings)
Lokesh Chandra (ed.)
The Narthang edition of the Tibetan Kanjur was initiated by Pho-lha-nas at an auspicious moment on 5 October
1730. The engraving of the xylographs was begun on the basis of the old Narthang edition which was handwritten
during the years 1312- 1320. This edition was supplemented by the catalogues of Tshal-pa, Bu-ston and others.
The engraving was completed on 21 February 1732. In the middle of 1733 the first xylographed set was presented
to the Panchen Lama for his blessings. Its printing blocks were deposited in the Narthang monastery, where they
were preserved till recently. The blocks have been destroyed in the political upheavals of the Chinese occupation.
As the xylographs have perished, the set has become extremely rare. The Narthang edition was the first to be
analysed into English by Alexander Csoma de Koros. His ‘Analysis’ appeared in 1836-39. In this first ever attempt
to survey the vast Tibetan Buddhist Canon, he opened up vistas of the treasures of art and thought, literature and
philosophy, grammar and lexicography, medicine and metallurgy, astronomy and alchemy and other branches of
learning of India hidden in the Tibetan language. This ‘Analysis’ became a foundation for the interpretation
of another discipline: the Chinese translations of Sanskrit texts could now be correlated to their original
Sanskrit titles. Since then this edition has been a must for the understanding of Tibetan Buddhism. The Narthang
Kanjur has seven major divisions: Vinaya, Prajñā-pāramitā, Ratnakūṭa. Avataṁsaka, Sūtra, Parinirvāṇa and Tantra.

(Critical Edition)
VOLUME I: The Pantheon of the Mantramahodadhi;
VOLUME II: The Pantheons of the Prapañcasāra and
the Śāradātilaka by Gudrun Bühnemann
This book deals with the iconography of Hindu
deities as presented in Sanskrit texts. Volume one
presents the 108 deity descriptions extracted from the
sixteenth-century North Indian Mantramahodadhi by
Mahīdhara. Each entry includes the Sanskrit text in
transliteration, a literal translation, a note on the
distribution of the iconographic attributes and
explanatory notes on the deities, taking into account
similar descriptions found in other Sanskrit texts.
Volume two compares for the first time deity
descriptions extracted from two earlier and closely
related texts, the anonymous Prapañcasāra and
Lakṣmaƒadeśikaís Śāradātilaka (twelfth century). The
Sanskrit text of the 78 deity descriptions extracted from
the Prapañcasāra and the 101 descriptions from the
Śāradātilaka is presented with a literal translation
and remarks on the iconography.

Bahulkar, Lata Mahesh Deokar & M. A. Deokar
The Vṛttamālāstuti or “Praise in the Form of a
Garland of Metres Counted by Syllables” is a
unique piece of literature composed by
Jñānaśrīmitra,
who
taught
Buddhist
philosophy and other subjects at the
university of Vikramaśīla in the first half of the
11th century. This work illustrates 150 metres in the
form of a hymn, as indicated by its title. The
addressee is the Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī. With great
ingenuity Jñānaśrīmitra manages to include the name
of each metre in the respective stanza in such a
manner that it becomes a natural part of the praise of
Mañjuśrī. Some of the names of the metres have no
independent meaning. The author therefore uses
various devices so that those words can fit in the
praise of Mañjuśrī. The commentary (Vivṛti) is a
most welcome aid for understanding the
intricacies of Jñānaśrīmitraís composition.

Viṣṇutattvanirṇaya is one of the best and greatest in

among
Madhva’s
ten
(daśaprakaraṇa-granthas). This book gives an
analytical outline of the text’s literary
composition providing a survey of the topics
discussed therein and furnishing at the same time the
background of these topics, and will draw the attention
of English speaking scholars to the philosophical and
theological system of Madhva.
Based on infusion with thought, analysis of concepts as they flash or
figure in by language are remarkable contributions of the book in the
field of philosophy proper. It is of high interest of academia to find a
philosophy here in this book for which philosophical reflections are not
only based on but are confined to the intelligible being of language and
meaning. The book works out nicely with the powers of language.

portrayed Vedanta philosophy as the ultimate unifier of diverse
belief systems. This project paved the way for the work of later
Hindu reformers whose teachings promoted the notion that all
world religions belong to a single spiritual unity.

Vikramaśīla Monastery in India, compiled a survey of the
structure of maṇḌalas. This work, called the
