Chapter activities since last report (meetings held, invited lectures, tutoring etc.):
WORKING MEETINGS:
5 May 2005
-
We set all the details for the upcoming visit from SPIE students from Lublin, such as
agenda of the meeting, come together, sightseeing details.
16 May 2005 - THE LAST MEETING BEFORE END-OF-TERM EXAMINATIONS AND HOLIDAYS
-
Chapter Officers pointed their plans for next academic year out.
-
We compared our plans from the beginning of the academic year with our achievements:
most of events went according to plan, one unplanned event we carried out (visit from
Lublin), but unfortunately there were still in our schedule some missing events: Scientific
Photography Contest and movie marathon.
30 September 2005 - MEETING OF CHAPTER OFFICERS WITH FACULTY ADVISOR
-
We summed up the last year of activity and discussed a must of new board election.
-
Michal Mrozinski reported his part in SPIE Annual Meeting to our advisor.
10 October 2005 - INTRODUCING MEETING
-
We introduce students - non SPIE members - to the basic aims of our SC SPIE. Students
were also informed about all Student Membership Benefits including SPIE Scholarships
and Grants
-
Michal Mrozinski reported the Annual Meeting in San Diego, in which he took part.
-
We have made plans of activities for the upcoming academic year.
17 October 2005
-
We continued to recruit new members and we gave an official welcome to new students
who joined our Chapter.
-
We had a meeting with prof. Piotr Targowski, who was talking to us on the behalf of
organizers of the Sixth Festival of Art and Science. Our Coordinator of Educational
Projects discussed our possibilities and limitations. “Old members” shared with others
their experience in organizing festival projects. After this meeting our students were
supposed to put forward their own ideas and projects.
November - students were consulting their ideas with our Coordinator.
22 November 2005
-
Finally we arranged our participation in the festival: two big projects “Unbelievable”
(surprising experiments in physics - workshop) and " Va banque with the police"
(workshop for future burglars, special agents and policemen ;-)
7 December 2005
-
Students were setting all the details for their experiments.
CONTACTS WITH OTHER STUDENT CHAPTERS SPIE
6-8 May 2005
Eliza Chodkowska, Magda Gradkowska, Marcin Majewski and Piotr Popiel – members of Student
Chapter SPIE Technical University in Lublin visited our chapter in Torun (see: in front of
Institute.jpg). During their 3 days stay we arranged:
- formal meeting with our advisor prof. Kowalczyk and prof. Hennel (a well known author of
many handbooks of physics); as a curiosity professors explained how the Foucault’s
pendulum works (see: pendulum.jpg)
- lecture meetings (see: lectures.jpg),
where each of our guests gave a talk (see: lecturer.jpg):
Optical Transport Network by Magda Gradkowska
Sol-gel materials in Optical Fibre Sensors by Eliza Chodkowska
Wavelength Division Multiplexing technology by Marcin Majewski
Flame Emission Spectroscopy by Piotr Popiel
and Iwona Gorczynska from our chapter presented:
Spectral Optical Coherence Tomography
- sightseeing our laboratories (see: lab.jpg)
- visiting Planetarium Torun (see: planetarium.jpg)
- sightseeing of Torun (see: Torun.jpg)
- come together (see: come together.jpg)
9-10 June 2005
Maciej Szkulmowski visited Technical University in Wroclaw and the Student Chapter SPIE in
Wroclaw where he gave a lecture: Dispersion compensation for Optical Coherence Tomography
31 July - 4 Aug 2005
Michal Mrozinski took part in the leadership training during Annual Meeting in San Diego,
California USA.
CONFERENCES
EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON BIOMEDICAL OPTICS 2005, Munich, 12-16 June 2005
Iwona Gorczynska, Anna Szkulmowska and Maciej Szkulmowski took part in ECBO. Two talks
were given:
1. Standard versus High Resolution Spectral Optical Coherence Tomography in Imaging of
Retinal Pathologies - I. Gorczyńska, A. Szkulmowska, M. Szkulmowski, P. Targowski, A.
Kowalczyk, J. J. Kałużny, M. Wojtkowski, J. G. Fujimoto
2. High Resolution Spectral Optical Coherence Tomography for Clinical Imaging of the
Anterior Segment of the Eye - A. Szkulmowska, I. Gorczyńska, M. Szkulmowski, P.
Targowski, A. Kowalczyk, B. J. Kałużny,
OPTICS & PHOTONICS 2005, San Diego, 31 July - 4 August 2005
Michal Mrozinski took part in the conference.
SPIE INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON OPTICS AND OPTOELECTRONICS
Warsaw, 28 Aug – 2 Sept 2005
Tomasz Bajraszewski gave a talk:
1. Spectral Optical Coherence Tomography in ophthalmology - T. Bajraszewski, I.
Gorczyńska, A. Szkulmowska, M. Szkulmowski, P. Targowski, A. Kowalczyk
All three talks were published in Proceedings of SPIE.
TUTORIALS
15 - 20 May 2005
Using the SOCRATES/ERASMUS programme Teaching Staff Mobility we invited Olaf Rolinski a
lecturer in the Department of Physics at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Great Britain
for giving 10 hours tutorial “Fluorence sensing”
24 - 25 May 2005
-We participate in lectures given by our guest Dr Ivan Ruddock from University of Strathclyde in
Glasgow, Great Britain: "Some aspects of optical fibres".
OTHER EVENTS
18 May 2005
Visit of high school students from Bydgoszcz. We presented smart toys explaining physical laws
(see: toys.jpg), gave a talk on how lasers work (laser action - see: laser.jpg, laser.avi), showed
and explained Pulfrich Effect (see: Pulfrich.jpg), showed how we can easily produce holographic
effects(see: holography.jpg), we also organized a tour during which our guests and their teachers
visited our laboratories.
17 November 2005
Celebrating the end of World Year of Physics 2005 three oaks were planted and a memorial
stone was placed in front of the Institute of Physics. “A stone” in German is “Ein Stein” and three
oaks named “Atom”, “Electron” and “Quantum” symbolize the most important concepts in
Einstein’s theories. Our chapter planted the oak “Electron” (see: planting oaks.jpg)
"Meetings in the optics laboratory"
Our lab-meetings turned out to be a good way for students to join research projects. Some of
them chose optical experiments for their BSc or MSc thesis. As far as these meetings do interest
students we are going to continue this activity.
Conference plans for the nearest future:
PHOTONICS WEST 2006, 21 – 26 JANUARY 2006, SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA
Quantitative analysis of photoreceptor layer in macular pathologies with three-dimensional
spectral optical coherence tomography - A. Szkulmowska, T. Bajraszewski, I. Gorczyńska, M.
Szkulmowski, P. Targowski, A. Kowalczyk, M. Wojtkowski
Future Chapter activities:
We are planning to:
- participate in The Sixth Festival of Science and Art in Torun (April 2006)
- update our web page
- arrange movie marathon
- visit Laboratory of Optical Fibre Technology at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin
- continue to give different lectures in optics during our meetings
