Edit the following passage for brevity and clarity of phrasing. Eliminate all unnecessary
words and expressions. Rephrase what can be said in a much simpler and more precise form.
In the 1980s, the tension which reached its top during the 33 years of threatening of
nuclear weapons was not only sensible in the field of politics but even in the everyday life of
people. For the 1980s, many people saw what was going on and started organizing mass
protests against a potential nuclear war. In spite of the increasing indignation of people, the
significant change occurred only in 1985, when Mikhail Gorbachev became the leader of the
Soviet Union. Gorbachev was able to realize that the Soviet Union could not hold its ground
anymore in the arms race. Therefore, in 1987 the United States of America and the Soviet
Union signed a treaty, which eliminated the nuclear missiles and then in the end of 1989 the
new president of the United States, George Bush declared the end of the Cold War.
Therefore, even if most of the citizens of the United States of America were not
actually involved in the Cold War because, as it can be seen, it was not a real fight, they could
not avoid its effects on their everyday life and world view. They had to live in a world that
was full of fear, threat and distrust, which made affected their life more than any other
changes in technology or medicine during this period.

As I mentioned in the previous part, the most significant changes in the 1980s can be
realized in the field of politics. But on the other hand, there were several developments and
innovations in the media and the field of communications during this time, which cannot be
left out of consideration. Due to the spread of the personal computers, the Internet, the
television sets, and the cable service, the news or anything that the different media wanted to
communicate towards the audience achieved people easier and faster than ever before. What
is more, with the spread of the new technology and media not only the getting of information
became easier, but the impact of the media on the ordinary people increased as well.
