Chapter 2- Nouns
2.1 Nouns
 A noun is a word that names a person, place, or thing.
 Examples- Person- Pilot, Place- Florida, Thing- airplane
2.2 Common and Proper Nouns
 A proper noun names a particular person, place, or thing.
Example- Miss Kunkel
 A common noun names any one member of a group of people,
places, or things. Example- teacher
2.3 Singular and Plural Nouns
 A singular noun names one person, place, or thing. Example- book
 A plural noun names more than one person, place, or thing.
Example- books
2.4 More Plural Nouns
 To make most nouns plural, you only need to add s or es. Some
nouns that end in y are different- you will drop the y and add ies.
 ies Examples- baby -> babies, country -> countries, sky -> skies,
galaxy -> galaxies
 s or es Examples- monkey -> monkeys, day -> days, boy -> boys
2.5 Irregular Plural Nouns
 The plurals of some nouns look different from their singular
form. These irregular plurals are NOT formed by adding s or es.
 Examples- ox -> oxen, child -> children, tooth -> teeth, foot ->
feet, sheep -> sheep, deer -> deer, moose -> moose
2.6 Singular Possessive Nouns
 The possessive form of a noun shows possession or ownership.
Example- neighbor’s house, Amy’s garden
 To form the singular possessive, or ownership by one person or
thing, add an ‘s. Example- friend -> friend’s, Pat -> Pat’s
2.7 Plural Possessive Nouns
 A plural possessive shows that more than one person owns
something. To make the plural possessive, add an ‘ after the s.
Example- girls’ bicycles, babies’ toys
2.8 Irregular Plural Possessive Nouns
 The plural forms of irregular nouns do NOT end in s. Add an ‘s to
the plural form of the word.
 Examples- oxen’s, mice’s, men’s, geese’s, women’s
2.9 Collective Nouns
 A noun that names a group of things or people is called a
collective noun.
 Examples- audience, class, club, family, crowd, flock, group, herd,
litter, pack, swarm, pair, team
2.10 Nouns as Subjects
 A noun may be used as the subject of a sentence. The subject
tells what the sentence is about. It tells who or what does
something.
 Examples- Artists draw and paint pictures. Paints can be messy.
Zoe is an artist.
2.11 Words used as Nouns and Verbs
 Many words can be used as both nouns and verbs. Examples- I
walk to the store (verb). Let’s go for a walk (noun). I like to
watch sports (verb). I wear a watch on my wrist (noun).
