Conference of Optical Instrument and Technology (OIT’08). This Symposium is sponsored
by China Instrument and Control Society (CIS) and is the meaningful product of
cooperation with SPIE, the international society advancing an interdisciplinary approach to
the science and application of light.
The academic and engineering activities of China Instrument and Control Society (CIS)
include the fields of Optical instruments, Control and measurement, Automatic sensor,
device and instruments, MEMS/NEMS technology, Auto-inspection engineering, and
scientific instrumentation. CIS has experienced its development for more than twenty years.
Now CIS has more than 30 branches to cover the related instrument domains and the
MICONEX international exhibition has its excellent reputation in high quality.
This OIT’08 conference is an important event for members of the optical instrument
community who need to keep up with what is happening in the optical instrument,
technology and industry. The cutting-edge technologies and applications of the optical
instrument are discussed in various conferences. OIT’08 also provides a unique platform for
participators to develop new partnerships and new markets. It is our expectation that the
combination of academic meeting and product exhibition will show high appreciation in

Alignment Issues of
Interferometer

Optical interference technique has had more than 100 year’s history
and has been widely applied in both research fields and industries.
Interferometer as a typically optical instrument, however, has
commercially become one of the most important metrology tools since
the seventies of the last century. During more than three decades,
various interferometers have been designed, such as from laser
interferometers to white light interferometers, from micro interferometer
to large interferometers etc. For all of the interferometers, alignment has
played a key role in manufacturing them.
This paper first describes several typical interferomters and alignment
goals, and then gives out practical examples, including 24” aperture
interferometer for testing NIF (National Ignition Facility) optics, which
was the largest phase shifting interferometer over world wide and

Brief Biography:
Dr. Sen Han, a Principle Scientist and SPIE fellow has been working at Veeco
Instruments Inc. since 1997. He is an adjunct professor of College of Optical
Sciences, University of Arizona, USA. Dr. Han won R&D 100 Award twice in
2005 and 2000, respectively. He obtained his Ph.D. from University of
Stuttgart, Germany.
Dr. Sen Han is the Principle Scientist and Engineering Project Manager of
Veeco Tucson. He is a SPIE Fellow and an adjunct professor of the College of
Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona. He received a B.S. and an M.S.
in Optical Engineering from Changchun Institute of Optics and Fine
Mechanics and a Ph. D. in Optical Engineering from University of Stuttgart.
Dr. Han led numerous projects in the field of metrology engineering,
particularly in optical testing, MEMS characterization through transmissive
media, and thin film testing. His innovations of design, alignment and
algorithm have helped led significant developments in commercial optical test
equipment.
Dr. Han has given 28 invited talks, including 8 plenary presentations, along
with nearly 40 other presentations at technical conference or workshops. Han
has published 15 refereed papers and 20 SPIE proceedings. He has won
numerous technical awards, including R&D 100 Award, two times; Veeco
Award, two times; First Prize/Excellent Paper Award, five times; Gold/Brown
Award of research project.
Dr. Han is a member of SPIE, ASPE and OSA, also is a board member of
CSMNT and board member of CSS oversea guest in China. He has received
SPIE Certificate of Appreciation twice. He has chaired 12 SPIE conferences
and regularly chairs meeting sessions, has been on the program committee of
numerous SPIE conferences and as a reviewer of “Applied Optics”, “Optics
Express”, “Optical Engineering”, and has edited 3 SPIE proceedings. Han is
an oversea reviewer of “Changjiang” professor.

On-line Dynamic
Measurement of Laser
Vision and its Applications

Laser vision measurement, one of the high and new technologies with
the most potential, organically combines laser and computer vision. It is
widely applied in advanced manufacture and automation engineering as
a result of its excellent features such as large measurement range,
non-contact, high precision, and high automation.
The report focuses on the theoretical methods, the key technologies,
and the engineering applications for the on-line dynamic measurement
of laser vision. The main content of the report includes: 1.the principle of
laser
vision;
2.the
technology
bottlenecks
of
on-line
dynamic
measurement of laser vision; 3.the field calibration for laser vision
sensor; 4.the field calibration for the laser vision system with
multi-sensors; 5.the rapid image feature extraction with high precision
for laser stripe, the special chip for real-time image processing, and a
series of hardware equipment; 6.the applications of on-line dynamic
measurement of laser vision, i.e., the dynamic angle measurement

system for guide head antenna; the on-line dynamic measurement
system for the overall geometry parameters of tyre; the dynamic motion
parameters measurement system for insect with high flappingfrequency.
Brief Biography:
Professor Zhang Guangjun was born in March 1965. He received PhD Degree
from Department of Precise Instrument Engineering, Tianjin University in
China in March 1991. He is currently the executive vice dean of graduate
school in Beihang University, and the director of Key Laboratory of Precision
Opto-mechatronics Technology, Ministry of Education in China. His research
interests are machine vision, opto-electronic measurement, precise
opto-mechatronics system. He was appointed to be the “Chair Professor of
Cheung Kong Scholar” by the Ministry of Education in 2000, and funded by
the “National Science Fund for Outstanding Youths” in 2001.

Distributed fiber sensors
based on stimulated Brillouin
scattering with centimeter
spatial resolution

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) based distributed sensor has been
used for strain and temperature monitoring in various civil structures1-2
due to its high spatial resolution of comparing to other type of the
distributed sensor, where the meter resolution has been reported. To
achieve
centimeter
spatial
resolution,
it
requires
detection
of
nanosecond pulse, that means the broadband electrical amplifiers are
required, often in the GHz level, such a broadband detector combined
with high bandwidth requirement of the digitizer have prevented the
application of the SBS based distributed sensor. On the other hand,
because of short pulse and interaction length, the Brillouin gain or loss
signal is very weak, the high gain and broadband detection and many
number of averages are required. To overcome the difficulty of the weak
signal, we have proposed pre-pumping idea3 to amplify the phonon field,
and the strong Stokes signal can be generated to detect 1cm crack
using 1ns pulse which is equivalent to 10cm spatial resolution. This
approach works well for large stress. With small stress, we have

introduced novel pulse shape to solve this problem: we use a probe
pulse followed by a dark base of a finite time length to achieve higher
spatial and frequency resolution for the first time. By using a short pulse
(<5ns) with high extinction ratio (>20dB) and followed by a dark base of
finite length, we can reduce the contribution of the dark pulse induce
large Brillouin peak top, so that small stress section and small Brillouin
frequency shift can be detected. The length of the dark base depends on
the pulse width, pump and probe power, the reduced Brillouin peak top
has increased the peak contrast of the small stress/temperature section
comparing to the non strain or temperature section. This new approach
takes advantage of the pre-pumping and high signal to noise ratio for the
short section of strain and/or temperature.
The second new progress is to introduce a differential BOTDA system
which uses a broad pulse 
and immediately following with a slightly shorter pulse  - to
send the sensing fibre,
the subtraction of the BOTDA trace at and
gives the detection of the  equivalent spatial resolution. Here is
much smaller than  and This means we can use tens nanosecond
pulse to achieve a few nanosecond pulse equivalent results, in other
words, with meters resolution we are able to distinguish the centimeter
resolution, which is limited by the resolution of the digitizer. The obvious
advantage of this new approach is that large pulse width gives long
interaction length and strong signal, yet the narrow bandwidth is
required for the detection with low gain. Thus the signal to noise ratio is
improved significantly. The signal processing time is not doubled, as the

number of average waveforms for scanning the Brillouin spectrum is
reduced to ~10 instead of 10,000 or so. Another advantage of this new
approach is that large pulse (>10ns) has no impact to the broadening of
the natural Brillouin spectrum. Hence we can have low DC which
reduces the cross-talk.
The third progress is made based on the SBS enhanced MZ interferometer in which is the PM-PCF is used to be connected to SMF. This
approach allows the acoustic wave detection using SBS based interferometer.
Brief Biography:
Dr. Xiaoyi Bao is a professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier I) in Fibre
Optics and Photonics in the Physics Department at the University of Ottawa,
Canada. Her research interests include development of fiber sensors for physcal, chemical and bio-medical sensing for civil structural health-monitoring,
security and environmental applications, she is also working on dynamic polarization mode dispersion monitoring and characterization in aerial, buried and
submarine fibers, impairments in high-speed communication systems, and
optical signal processing.
