Course Title: Algebra COE Highly Qualified Teacher: Chuck Scheiwiller Advisor: Greg Maddigan, Hydee Reber, Chuck Scheiwiller, Martha Severn Dates of Class: 8/31/2015 – 6/15/2016 Credits: 0.50 Certificated Contact Method: In-Person Instructional Contact Class Description: This course is designed for students to prepare a portfolio of evidence as an alternative to meeting Washington State Standards of Algebra 1. The course will provide students with the opportunity to strengthen their algebra skills in preparation for the End of Course assessment (EOC) while producing evidence of their mathematical knowledge in the form of a series state approved “mini” assessments. This course is similar to a typical Algebra class which is designed to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades. Units will be designed to deepen and extend understanding of both linear and quadratic relationships, it will also provide students with the opportunity to strengthen their skill needed to manipulate expressions and functions as well as deepen a student’s fundamental understanding of how functions and function notation play a critical role in the foundations of mathematics in general. Learning Materials: Algebra 1. Holt McDougal. 2011 Khan, Alex State and District sponsored support materials Learning Goals: Numbers, Expressions, and Operations: A1.2.B recognizes the multiple uses of variables, determine all possible values of variables that satisfy prescribed conditions, and evaluates algebraic expressions that involve variables A1.2.C Interprets and uses integer exponents and square and cube roots, and applies the laws and properties of exponents to simplify and evaluate exponential expressions A1.2.E uses algebraic properties to factor A1.2.F Adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides polynomials Characteristics and Behaviors of Functions: A1.3.A determines whether a relationship is a function and identifies the domain and range, roots, and independent and dependent variables A1.3.B represents a function with a symbolic expression, as a graph, in a table, and using words, and making connections among these representations A1.3.C Evaluates f(x) at a (i.e., f(a)) and solves for x in the equation f(x)=b Linear Functions, Equations, and Inequalities: A1.4.A Writes and solves linear equations and inequalities in one variable A1.4.B Writes and graphs an equation for a line given the slope and y-intercept, slope and a point on the line or 2 points on the line and translates between forms A1.4.D Writes and solves systems of two linear equations and inequalities in two variables Quadratic Functions and Equations: A1.5.A Represents a quadratic function with a symbolic expression, as a graph, in a table and with a description, and makes connections among the representations A1.5.B Sketches the graph of a quadratic function, describes the effects that changes in the parameters have on the graph and interprets the x-intercepts as solutions to a quadratic equation A1.5.C Solves quadratic equations that can be factored as (ax + b) (cx + d) where a, b, c and d are integers Data and Distributions: A1.6.B Makes valid inferences and draws conclusions based on data A1.6.D Finds the equations of a linear function that best fits bivariate data that are linearly related, interprets the slope and y-intercept of the line, and uses the equation to make predictions A1.6.E describes the correlation of data in scatterplots in terms of strong or weak and positive or negative Additional Key Content: A1.7.A Sketches the graph for an exponential function of the form y= abn where n is an integer, describes the effects that changes in the parameters a and b have on the graph, and answers questions that arise in situations modeled by exponential functions A1.7.B Finds and approximates solutions to exponential equations. Performance Objectives: Students: Extend their understanding of numbers and operations to include all real numbers. Learn to manipulate and evaluate a wide variety of expressions including integer exponents, square and cube roots Formalize their understanding of domain and range along with roots. Evaluate and interpret functions. Model situations with linear functions and interpret slope within context. Write and solve linear equations both with and without context. Learn quadratic functions and their graphs. Learn to solve quadratic equations by factoring and use of the quadratic formula over the real number system. Analyze data to study relationships between variables and make and defend appropriate predictions, conjectures and generalizations. Model situations with exponential functions. Learning Activities: Unit 1: Linear Equations and Inequalities Inclusion Task 1 Preparation Assignments 1-5 Inclusion Task 1 Inclusion Task 2 Preparation Assignments 1-5 Inclusion Task 2 5 Weeks Unit 2: Numbers, Operations, Expressions and Variables Inclusion Task 3 Preparation Assignments 1-5 Inclusion Task 3 Inclusion Task 4 Preparation Assignments 1-5 Inclusion Task 4 Unit 3: Characteristics and Behaviors of Linear and Non-Linear Functions 4 Weeks Inclusion Task 5 Preparation Assignments 1-5 Inclusion Task 5 Unit 4: Data and Statistics 6 Weeks 3 Weeks Inclusion Task 6 Preparation Assignments 1-5 Inclusion Task 6 Progress Criteria/Methods of Evaluation: Students complete the state required “Tasks” and meet all the requirements of the State COE Units are arranged so that students work through assigned practice materials to master the ‘I can’ statements for each target. Once they have gained the needed skills through teacher prepared practice materials they will then complete one of the State assigned “Tasks” which are built around several learning targets which require them to apply their skills to real – world problems. These “Tasks” act as an assessment of the student’s ability to apply both skills and knowledge of theory when completing a given problem.
