For Adults (Part A)
Musculoskeletal System (1.00)
This category of impairments consists of disorders of the musculoskeletal system that
may result from hereditary, congenital or acquired pathologic processes. Impairments
may result from infectious, inflammatory, or degenerative processes, traumatic or
developmental events, or neoplastic, vascular, or toxic/metabolic diseases. Examples:
Major joint dysfunctions, certain disorders of the spine, amputation, extreme bone
fractures that cause you to be non-ambulatory, and burns.
Special Senses and Speech (2.00)
This category of impairments includes visual disorders, loss of
speech, and hearing loss. For more about the evaluation process
for each click here.
Respiratory System (3.00)
This category covers impairments resulting from respiratory disorders. These disorders must be
established by medical evidence. Examples: chronic pulmonary insufficiency (chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease, chronic restrictive ventilatory disease), asthma, cystic fibrosis,
pneumoconiosis, bronchiectasis, chronic persistent infections of the lung (mycobacterial,
mycotic), cor pulmonale secondary to chronic pulmonary vascular hypertension, sleep-related
breathing disorders, and lung transplant.
Cardiovascular System (4.00)
Any disorder that affects the proper functioning of the heart or circulatory
system (congenital or acquired). Examples: chronic heart failure, ischemic
heart disease, recurrent arrhythmias, symptomatic congenital heart disease,
heart transplant, aneurysm of aorta or major branches, chronic venous
insufficiency, and peripheral arterial disease.
Digestive System (5.00)
Impairments in this category include gastrointestinal hemorrhage,
hepatic (liver) dysfunction, inflammatory bowel disease, short
bowel syndrome, and malnutrition.
Genitourinary Disorders (6.00)
This category covers genitourinary disorders that result in chronic
kidney disease (CKD). This includes CKD with chronic hemodialysis or
peritoneal dialysis, CKD with kidney transplant, CKD with impairment of
kidney function, nephrotic syndrome, and specific complications of CKD.
Hematological Disorders (7.00)
This category includes impairments caused by anemia and sickle cell disease. Other
examples include: Chronic thrombocytopenia, hereditary telangiectasia, coagulation
defects (such as hemophilia), polycythemia vera (with erthrocytosis, splenomegaly, and
leukocytosis or thromboyctosis), myelofibrosis, chronic granulocytopenia, and aplastic
anemias with bone marrow or stem cell transplantation.
Skin Disorders (8.00)
This category includes such impairments as: Ichthyosis, bullous disease,
chronic infections of the skin or mucous membranes, dermatitis,
hidradentis suppurativa, genetic photosensitivity disorders (ex:
xeroderma pigmentosum), and burns.
Endocrine Disorders (9.00)
This category includes medical conditions that causes a hormonal
imbalance. Examples: pituitary gland disorders, thyroid gland disorders,
parathyroid gland disorders, adrenal gland disorders, diabetes mellitus
and other pancreatic gland disorders (hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia).
Congenital Disorders that Affect Multiple
Body Systems (10.00)
This category only includes
(chromosome 21 trisomy).
non-mosaic
Down
syndrome
Neurological (11.00)
This category includes some of the following conditions: epilepsy, central nervous system
vascular accident, brain tumors, parkinsonian syndrome, cerebral palsy, spinal cord or nerve
root lesions, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), anterior poliomyelitis,
myasthenis gravis, muscular dystrophy, peripheral neuropathies, subacute combined cord
degeneration (pernicious anemia), Huntington’s Chorea, Friedreich’s ataxia, spino-cerebellar
degeneration, cerebral trauma, and syringomyelia.
Mental Disorders (12.00)
Nine diagnostic categories including: organic mental disorders (disorientation to time and
place, memory impairment, perceptual or thinking disturbances, change in personality,
disturbance in mood, emotional lability and impairment in impulse control, loss of
measured intellectual ability); schizophrenic, paranoid and other psychotic disorders;
affective disorders (ex: depression, ADHA, hallucinations, bipolar syndrome); intellectual
disability; anxiety-related disorders; somatoform disorders; personality disorders
substance addiction disorders; and autistic disorders and other pervasive developmental
disorders.
Malignant Neoplastic Diseases (13.00)
This category includes all malignant neoplasms except certain neoplasms associated with
human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Examples: soft tissue tumors of the head
and neck, skin cancer, soft tissue sarcoma, lymphoma, leukemia, multiple myeloma,
thyroid cancer, breast cancer, bone cancer, mouth cancer, central nervous system
malignant neoplasms, lung cancer, mesothelioma of pleura or tumors of the mediastinum,
stomach or esophagus cancer, cancer in small or large intestine, pancreatic cancer,
kidney cancer, bladder cancer, cervical, uterine, or ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, and
testicular cancer.

vasculitis, systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), polymyositis and dermatomyositis,
undifferentiated and mixed connective tissue disease, immune deficiency disorders
(sepsis, meningitis, pneumonia, septic arthritis, endocarditis, sinusitis), human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, inflammatory arthritis, Sjögren’s syndrome.
