PHYSICS 9 (Section 2677)
COURSE INFORMATION
SPRING 2003
Physics 9 General Physics is a calculus-based introduction to physical laws and
principles. Electricity and magnetism, optics, and modern physics will all be covered.
Specific emphasis will be given to those applications one encounters in everyday life,
such optical fibers, lasers, and semiconductors. Solid problem-solving skills will be
developed by first understanding the physical concepts involved.

Laboratory sessions for the course will be integrated into the course material so that
they are used to reinforce and expand your understanding of the topics being covered,
rather than being a separate entity of dubious relevance to the course.
PREREQUISITE:
Math 7 (calculus); Physics 8
FINAL EXAM: Please note that the date and time for the final exam is:
Tuesday June 10th, 12 NOON – 3 PM
ALL STUDENTS MUST ATTEND THIS EXAMINATION AT THIS TIME.
HOMEWORK:
Generally, homework will be assigned each class, and must be completed before the
start of the next class. The homework will NOT normally be handed in, but will be
discussed in the next class, so it is VITAL that you attempt the problems yourself,
before class. If you are having problems with the material, then it is time to come talk
with me about the confusing points. Often all it takes is a couple of simple examples to
set things straight. It is NOT the time to copy any other student's homework.
Anyone copying from another's homework, quiz, or exam will receive a grade of
ZERO for that assignment or exam, as will the person from whom the answers
were obtained.
EXAMS/QUIZZES:
There will be short quizzes during the semester, announced in the previous
class.
The dates for exams are:
Midterm #1: March 20th
Midterm #2: May 6th
Midterm #3: May 29th
Final exam: 12 – 3 pm, June 10th.
GRADING:
Your grade in Physics 9 will be approximately determined as follows:
3% - class participation/homework
17% - laboratory
22% - quizzes
33% - midterm exams
25% - final exam
Every unexcused absence or tardy (more than 15 minutes) will result in a loss of 1%.
You will be dropped (or receive an F) if you have 3 unexcused absences or tardies.
From this total percentage score, your letter grade for the course will be determined
using the scale below.
