USEFUL FOR: An aid in the diagnosis of congenital herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection
through the recovery of HSV using viral culture (shell-vial) on neonates (< 35 days old).
METHODOLOGY: Virus culture by shell-vial
REFERENCE VALUES: No virus isolated
SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS:
Specimen Type: Swab
Container/Tube: Dacron-tipped swab with plastic handle (Supply T507) and M5 media
Sources: ocular, rectal, anus, skin, dermal, mouth, nasopharynx, conjunctiva, eye
Collection Instructions: send entire swab in M5 viral transport media
Specimen Type: Urine

CAUTIONS: This test should not be performed on patients older than 35 days of age. It is intended
for the recovery of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in suspected cases of congenital herpes. For
patients older than 35 days of age, detection of HSV by real-time PCR is recommended.
Real-time PCR for HSV is the recommended test for all cases of central nervous system disease
caused by this virus. Viral culture is an insensitive approach for detection of HSV in
cerebrospinal fluid.
