Position Description
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES/JOB TASKS
1. 90% Network Layer: Plans, designs and provisions broadband dedicated data circuits and
corresponding infrastructure to ensure adequate bandwidth is available for the services
customers have purchased.
Tasks Include: Work with Cisco networking equipment (such as switches and routers)
and software; Work with Calix access system devices and software; Design, integrate,
configure, deploy, test network solutions; Provide ongoing maintenance for numerous
types of network devices, interfaces and methodologies; Implement specific network
solutions to support server requirements to include load balancing, VPNs, firewall
contexts, traffic shaping for VoIP, GRE tunneling, IP Security, IP Encryption, Media
over IP, and network address translation; Minimize network latency and maximize data
throughput through design analysis and network performance monitoring tools;
Facilitate the implementation of high-speed, scalable, fault-tolerant network topologies
as applicable to WAN and LAN design; Coordinate the system engineering and
dataflow efforts to ensure proper mission operations to minimize down time; Configure
and optimize the network to connect various front-end and back-end components;
Optimize end-to-end system performance and dataflow management; Coordinate with
dataflow organizations and end-customer recipients, follow data repositories and
tasking organizations to mitigate potential adverse impacts on system-wide dataflow;
Validate new and existing dataflow and data formats; Establish procedures for strict
control of each item of keying material whenever the material is turned over to another
individual; Configure and maintain network diagrams and accreditation; Develop
algorithms used in modules or incorporated into models associated with the research
and development of technologies and systems; Resolve complex network problems,
operate network analyzers, WAN test equipment and network simulators
2. 10% Other Assignments: Trains and consults with technicians and other colleagues within
and outside the department. Collaborates and assists with other IP Department
functions. Updates equipment inventory and documents activity on One Note.
Monitored by the IP Manager through regular meetings and consideration of feedback
from customers and employees.
(Continually looks for new and improved ways of completing the above functions. Other tasks as assigned by
supervisor will be performed in order to address unexpected situations or needs that may arise.)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position requires the ability to participate as a member of a team, essential for problem solving
activities and completing tasks. To accomplish job tasks information must be obtained from others
and formal and informal training provided. This position is also responsible for establishing and
maintaining positive relations by effectively communicating at all levels of the organization and
externally at all levels. Negotiation and persuasion is required within the organization and
externally with customers and vendors. Responsible for participating in strategic planning
annually. Essential responsibilities do not reflect general overall departmental knowledge required
to provide on call support.

LATITUDE:
Duties are self-defined with considerable flexibility in scheduling and accomplishing
responsibilities. Problem solving requires extensive knowledge. Most decisions not effecting other
departments can be made independently in accordance with company policy. All purchase requests
are referred to the supervisor.
IMPACT OF POSITION:
Successful completion of essential job functions supports the company by providing quality
wireless services. Errors usually impact a single department or phase of the organization and could
result in moderate monetary effect, have a high probability of loss of customers, and affect
operating costs since duties involve the preparation of data upon which management bases
important decisions.
CUSTOMER SERVICE/INTERACTION:
Daily phone, email, and face-to-face contact with employees throughout the organization to
complete work tasks.
Weekly phone and email contact with customers.
Monthly phone and email contact with vendors to complete work tasks.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
CCNA and CCNP certifications preferred
Calix E7 certification preferred
Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, preferred.

Position Description
EXPERIENCE:
6-7 years of progressive network experience preferred
LICENSE:
A valid UT driver’s license and a good driving record, required.
EQUIPMENT:
Computer, phone, general office equipment, telecommunications test equipment, general
hand tools, Network Verification tool, RJ45 crimper, RF cable crimper, fiber cleaner.
PHYSICAL:
Occasional bending, carrying, lifting up to 40 lbs. independently, squatting, twisting, and
turning, required.
Frequent demonstration of manual dexterity and visualizing of a computer screen, required.
TRAINING:
Ongoing training on Cisco, Calix and other equipment
WORK CONDITIONS:
Office and occasional field environment in all types of weather
OTHER:
Occasional overnight travel required.
Occasional travel by air required.
Frequent travel by vehicle required.
Frequent on call required
Frequent overtime required
