Areas covered include running and crewing a production, hardware and tool usage, scenic construction techniques, materials, welding, drafting, stage lighting, scene shifting techniques, and common technical practices involved in the bring the plan of the technical production to realization on stage. Theatre Workshop - This is a practical/laboratory course in technical theatre production. Instruction and supervision of properties construction, stage lighting production, and scenic construction and finishing for actual production. Students are assigned responsibilities and experience collaborative input in the creation of productions. This hands on class is a practical extension of lecture courses in technical Theatre Introduction to Design for the Theatre - The emphasis is placed on the process shared by all designers scenic, lighting, costume, and to some degree sound designers - from conceptual research to planning. General instruction on the process of theatrical design through script analysis, development of design concept, and research together with exploration of the visual language of the theatre through instruction and projects in drawing, color rendering, and drafting. The objective is to familiarize the student with the basic principles of design, present a survey of the history of design for the theatre, and to assist in the development of skills to articulate their design choices. Scenic Design - The objective is the development of the background necessary to design sets for production. Course content is dedicated to exploration of the process of designing scenery for a production with emphasis on the development of the criteria for making design choices and articulating these to a director and production team. Exercises in design projects include analysis and research, scene rendering, execution of ground plans and details, and presenting completed designs to the class. Stage Lighting - Lectures with associated lab sessions, demonstrations, and practical projects on the subject of lighting production. Areas covered include basic electricity, equipment and instrumentation, circuitry, control systems, effects, automated lighting, and characteristic lighting design practices. Painting and the Scenic Art - The emphasis is in preparing the student for work as a scenic artist. Lab sessions dealing with materials and equipment, color and paint mixing, analysis of artwork, surface preparation and construction, layout/lay-in, detail painting, and three-dimensional texturing. CAD Applications for the Theatre - The course is structured to offer students understanding of computer aided drawing procedures and techniques. The course is dedicated to manipulation of the AutoCAD drafting program and instruction on drawing conventions and types of drawings for the theatre. The objective is to give the student the background in CAD and drawing conventions they can apply to the articulation of designs for the theatre and plans for actual productions. This is a hands-on course in which students execute plans, elevations, and isometrics complete with necessary dimensions and details Advanced Stage Lighting - Structured to explore stage lighting strictly as an art form through assigned readings, analysis of artwork, and practical projects and lab sessions exploring the psychophysical characteristics of light. Properties Design – Detailed exploration of analysis and production style, design, materials, construction techniques, and finishing in a lab setting.
