4.) an order issued by President Lincoln on January 1, 1863, declaring slaves in the
Confederate states to be free
5.) the right of an accused person to appear in court so a judge can determine whether he or
she is being imprisoned lawfully
6.) a speech by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 at the site of the Battle of Gettysburg in
memory of the Union soldiers who had died trying to protect the ideals of freedom upon
which the nation was founded
7.) a village in Virginia that was the site of the Confederate surrender to Union forces under
the command of General Ulysses S. Grant
8.) was a strategy created by Union General Winfield Scott in 1861, early on in the Civil War.
It called for strangling the Southern Confederacy, much like an Anaconda. It was never
officially adopted by the Union government.
9.) In the 1860s, the Copperheads comprised a vocal faction of Democrats in the Northern

peace settlement with the Confederates. Republicans started calling anti-war Democrats
"Copperheads", likening them to the venomous snake.
10.)
a war that is unrestricted in terms of the weapons used, the territory or combatants
involved, or the objectives pursued, especially one in which the laws of war are
disregarded.
11.)
was an infantry regiment that saw extensive service in the Union Army during the
American Civil War. The regiment was one of the first official African-American units in the
United States during the Civil War.
