Subject Area: Science Unit: Weather Student Name: ________________ I must be comfortable with the following ideas and concepts: Concept 1. I am able to use what I know about: a. warm air rising and cool air falling b. the earth’s atmosphere to predict where it is most likely to be warm and cool, both inside and outside. 2. I am able to describe how air moves when one area is warm and another area is cool. 3. I can use different instruments to find how fast the wind is moving and from what direction it is blowing from. 4. I can prove that the air contains evaporated water, and that precipitation and dew are created as a result of this moisture. 5. I know the difference between rain, snow, hail, and sleet and can accurately measure each of these forms of precipitation. 6. I am able to identify different types of clouds and use them to predict different weather patterns. Evidence of Learning 7. I am able to accurately measure different aspects of weather, including temperature, air pressure, wind speed and direction, and relative humidity, and record it over a period of time. 8. I understand how the Sun affects the earth’s temperature, both in the difference between day and night and from season to season. 9. I understand that different materials, like sand, snow, dirt, water, and rock, heat and cool differently, affecting weather systems. 10. I am able to describe the difference between climate and weather, and understand why the earth has different climates. 11. I am able to describe how human actions have an impact on changing weather patterns. 12. I know how important it is to be able to forecast the weather so that I can be adequately prepared. 13. I am able to make decisions regarding which types of fabrics stand up better to different types of weather based on my own tests/observations.
