The student shall be able to understand the epidemiology of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and crystal-induced arthritis. 2. The student shall be able to distinguish the history and physical findings for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and crystal-induced arthritis. 3. The student shall be able to list the predisposing factors for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and crystal-induced arthritis. 4. The student shall be able to recognize additional testing or imaging necessary for the management of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and crystal-induced arthritis 5. The student shall understand the basic treatments for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and crystal-induced arthritis. Lecture Objectives: 6. The student shall be able to understand the pathogenesis of SLE as a hyper-reactivity and hypersensitivity of B and T cells and ineffective regulation of antibody responses. 7. The student shall be able to understand the role of auto-antibodies and the relative diagnostic specificity and sensitivity of auto-antibodies that may test positive or negative in SLE. 8. The student shall be able to describe various potential predisposing factors in SLE and SLE flareups (including genetic, hormonal and environmental factors). 9. The student shall be describe the pathology and clinical manifestations of such pathology of SLE as it effects various systems (particularly renal, dermatological, cardiovascular). 10. The student shall be able to describe the 11 diagnostic criteria used to diagnose SLE in adults and the correlating diagnostic criteria used in children. 11. The student shall be able to discuss treatment strategies for SLE, side effects of common treatments, and how treatment may differ in adults vs. children, pregnant vs. non-pregnant women, and life-threatening vs. non-life-threatening situations. 12. The student shall be able to the epidemiology of SLE and various prognostic markers associated with the disease. Lecture Objectives: 1. The student shall be able to discuss the epidemiology of systemic sclerosis with respect to age, gender, and race. 2. The student shall be able to understand the pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of systemic sclerosis in various organ systems (especially GI, renal, cardiovascular, and pulmonary). 3. The student shall be able to describe broader disease categories with which sclerosis is associated, specifically CREST syndrome, and explain the various components of this disease. 4. The student shall be able to discuss treatment options for systemic sclerosis and side effects of such treatment regimens. 5. The student shall be able to describe diagnostic tests and lab values associated with diagnosis and prognosis of sclerosis. Lecture Objectives: 1. The student shall be able to recognize the various diseases that make up the spondyloarthropathies, including ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter’s syndrome, reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis; and the diseases associated with these various spondyloarthropathies (IBD, Whipple’s, Behcet’s, etc). 2. The student shall be able to understand the epidemiology of each of these diseases. 3. The student shall be able to describe the clinical findings of each of these diseases and be familiar with specific tests to be completed in a physical exam when diagnosing these diseases. 4. The student shall be able to understand the various lab values and imaging findings associated with these diseases, and understand their role in the diagnostic process. 5. The student shall be able to understand treatment options for the spondyloarthropathies. Vallurupalli, M.D. Goal: To understand the pathogenesis, predisposing factors, and treatment of infectious arthritis and osteomyelitis. Lecture Objectives: 1. The student shall be able to understand the pathogenesis, predisposing factors, microbiological organisms, diagnostic work-up and treatment options for infections of the joint space (infectious arthritis). 2. The student shall be able to understand the common forms of viral arthritis and clinical features of each. 3. The student shall be able to understand the pathogenesis, predisposing factors, microbiological organisms, diagnostic work-up and treatment options for infections of the bone (osteomyelitis).
