Problems Acceleration in Electric Fields
1. Calculate the speed of an e- accelerated in a vacuum by a p.d. of 1000 volts. Hint:
think about the work energy equivalence.
2. Electrons are accelerated by an electric field in a television picture tube whose
field strength is 1 x 105 N/C.
a. Find the force on the electron.
b. If the field is constant, find the acceleration of the electron.
3. How much PE would a neutron have as a result of its position in an electric field?
4. A proton is released from rest in a p.d. of 100-V between 2 parallel plates. What
is its speed just as it reaches the negative plate?
5. Two large parallel plates are separated by 2.0 x 10-3 m. The plates have a p.d. of
4.0 x 103 V.
a. Calculate the field intensity between the plates.
b. Determine the force an e- would feel in the field.
c. Calculate the acceleration of an e- released in the field.
d. What would be the maximum acceleration for a proton released in the
field?
e. Calculate the work done in Joules and eV to an e- between the plates.
f. Calculate the velocity of a p+ released from rest at the positive plate just
as it reaches the negative plate. Hint use energy considerations.
