DYNAMIC EARTH
PART 2
Plate Tectonic—the moving of lithospheric plates resulting in major
geological events
Geological Events—events such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions,
and mountain building that are results of plate movements
Lithosphere—top most solid part of the Earth that is composed of the
crust and some of the mantle
Crust—the surface layer of the Earth
Upper Mantle—layer of Earth just below the Earth’s crust that is liquid
molten rock
Convecting Mantle— the movement of heat through the Earth's
mantle from the center (core) toward the surface (crust)
Metallic Core—the solid innermost layer of the Earth made mostly of
iron and nickel
Rocks—a naturally occurring hard substance made of one or more
minerals or mineral like substances
Rock Layers— an area of rock that was all made (deposited) at the
same time and has similar composition (make-up)
Fossils—the preserved remains or traces of an ancient organism
