CURRICULUM VITAE Daniel Friel e-mail:[email protected] EDUCATION 1992 – 2003 (May) NEW SCHOOL FOR SOCIAL RESEARCH Ph.D. in Political Science, Comparative Politics Dissertation: Labor Policy, Choice and Corporate Restructuring: A case study of the Reorganization at a German Conglomerate in the United States and Germany Abstract: this dissertation argues that the training system and labors laws in the U.S. should be altered to enable firms to implement team-based restructuring programs. This type of reorganization could enable them to dramatically reduce research, development and production times. To compensate for their inability to implement such programs firms in the U.S. are often forced to pursue low-road approaches such as downsizing and outsourcing. In stark contrast, the preservation of the training system and labor laws in Germany enable firms to remain competitive while retaining their high-road approach and internal labor market flexibility. Consequently this dissertation suggests that German policies could serve as a model for changing the current labor market system in the U.S. 1992 THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY Degree: M.A. in Political Science, Political Theory 1990 UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON Degree: B.A. in International Studies Primary Areas of Specialization Political Economy Economic Sociology Comparative Politics Secondary Areas of Specialization Political Theory Advanced Industrial Societies Industrial Relations Teaching Experience 3/2004 - Present Visiting Professor, Universidad de San Andrés Class taught: Introduction to Administration, A Firm´s Environment: the Impact of Social and Political Structures on Organizational Behavior & Managing Best Practices in a Global Environment (latter is an MBA course) 1/2000 – 5/2003 Instructor in the General Studies, New York University Classes taught: Social Foundations I & II (intro to philosophy) Daniel Friel 2 Sophomore Seminar: The Modern State and the Growth of Global Capitalism 9/98 – 12/2000 Instructor in History, Iona College Classes taught: Topics in Western Civilization Contemporary Civilizations I & II 9/98- 5/99 Instructor in Political Science, Mercy College Classes taught: American Government & European History Fellowships, Awards, and Honors • Nominated for the “Give a Violet” campaign at New York University, recognizing my service to NYU • Recognized as a premier teacher by Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, 2002; nominated by a former student • Fellow for an ongoing workshop, “The Corporation as a Social Institution” sponsored by the Social Science Research Council and held annually at the University of California, Berkeley • Fellow for a summer institute on “The Economics and Politics of Labor in Advanced Societies” sponsored by the Social Science Research Council and the German-American Academic Council in August, 1999 and July, 2000 • Recipient of DAAD scholarship from the German government to study Economics in Bremen, Germany during the 93-94 academic year • Recipient of a Scholarship from the New School University for the 1992-1993 academic year • Graduated Magna cum Laude from the University of Dayton International Experience • Freelance journalist for Notimex, a Mexican News agency, covering the entry of KFOR troops into Kosovo in June, 1999 • Participant in a study abroad program in Poland and Russia in the summer of 1989 • Intern as a metal worker with Stern Werkzeuge, an Austrian tool producer in Styr, Austria, summer of 1990 • AFS foreign exchange student to West Germany from August 1985 until July 1986 Daniel Friel 3 Fieldwork • Interviewed managers and workers at a German conglomerate in the United States and Germany; interviews in the latter country conducted in German • Conducted archival research on the decline of the guilds in Bremen, Germany Professional Affiliations/Memberships • The Founding member of the History of Current Events Club at New York University, General Studies Program • Member of the American Political Science Association • Vice President of The American-International Club, University of Dayton Written Work Published work “Transferring a Lean Production Concept from Germany to the United States: the Impact of Labor Laws and Training Systems” (forthcoming: May, 2005) Academy of Management Executive Review of Dimitra Doukas. 2003.
