Vocabulary-Unit 8 Solid Figures
Base: For two-dimensional figures, any side can be a base. Typically, however, the
bottom side, on which the polygon 'sits,' is called the base.
Base of a Cone: The flat, circular portion of the cone.
Base of a Pyramid: The face that does not intersect the other faces at the vertex. The
base is a polygonal region.
Bases of a Cylinder: The two congruent and parallel circular regions that form the ends
of the cylinder.
Bases of a Prism: The two faces formed by congruent polygons that lie in parallel
planes, all of the other faces being parallelograms.
Cone: 3-D figure with 1 circular base and 1 vertex
Cube: Regular polyhedron whose 6 faces are congruent squares
Cubic Units: Standard measure of volume.
Cylinder: 3-D object with two parallel, congruent circular bases
Diameter: he distance across a circle through its center. The line segment that includes
the center and whose endpoints lie on the circle.
Edge: The intersection of a pair of faces in a 3-D object
Face: 1 of the sides of a polyhedron
Geometric Solid: The collective term of all bounded three dimensional geometric
figures.
Net: 2-D figure that, when folded, forms the surfaces of a 3-D object
Parallel Lines: Two lines are parallel if they lie in the same plane and they do not
intersect.
Polygon: A closed figure formed by three or more line segments.
Polyhedron: 3-D figure that has polygons as faces
Prism: A polyhedron with 2 parallel and congruent bases, and other faces that are
parallelograms
Pyramid: A polyhedron with 1 base and the same number of triangular faces as there
are sides of the base
Right Prism: A prism, which has bases aligned one directly above the other and has
lateral faces that are rectangles.
Rectangle: A parallelogram with four right angles.
Sphere: The set of all points in space that are equidistant from a fixed point, called the
center.
Square: A quadrilateral that has four right angles and four equal sides.
Surface Area: Total area of the 2-D surfaces that make up a 3-D surface
Triangle: A polygon with three sides.
Vertex (vertices): A common endpoint
Volume: The amount of space occupied by an object
