Intelsat EpicNG: Global Broadband
Infrastructure for Maritime Applications
Enabling Customized Solutions with
Ease and Efficiency
• Maritime operators are implementing
increasingly sophisticated fleet management
applications. They need a highly reliable
broadband network that supports their
demanding environment.
• To capture share in this fast-growing
opportunity, maritime communications
service providers can differentiate themselves
by delivering broadband services that are
customized to their customers’ requirements.
• Intelsat, the world leader in maritime
broadband, has integrated its Intelsat EpicNG
high throughput satellite (HTS) platform with
traditional wide beam capacity and the sectors’
most comprehensive terrestrial infrastructure.
• Maritime operators, and their communications
service providers, are now able to access
Intelsat’s global maritime solution that is flexible and scalable, with consistently superior performance for the applications that matter most.
Maritime Owners Demanding Efficient,
Consistent, Always-On Broadband
Today’s maritime fleets are no longer a simple
delivery system that only occasionally checks in
with headquarters. As a result, the broadband
demands of ship operations are only increasing,
having to take into account bandwidth-heavy
applications such as performance monitoring,
EDCIS, cargo management, weather routing
and crew welfare. Today’s vessels are now an
extension of an operator’s communications
infrastructure and bandwidth demand is being
driven to unprecedented levels.
As Intelsat was the first satellite operator to
design broadband connectivity for the maritime
sector, we are well versed in the challenges that
service providers have when designing a network
solution. Service providers seek the flexibility
to satisfy not only the end users current needs,
but position to deliver the next generation’s
requirements as well – without stranding valuable
capital investments. Working closely with our
customers, Intelsat designs solutions that are
global, resilient and flexible, with a focus on
maximizing service efficiency and return on
investment for our customers.
Intelsat EpicNG: Designed to Deliver
a Superior User Experience
With fleet management applications growing
in sophistication, Intelsat designed EpicNG with
spot beams and frequency reuse technologies,
concentrating the power of the individual
transponders over a smaller area. This will allow
for higher modulation schemes that dramatically
increase the number of bits delivered per MHz, resulting in lower cost per bit for the service provider.
Intelsat EpicNG was also designed so that it is fully
integrated with our existing fleet and IntelsatOne®
terrestrial network. Maritime fleets accessing
Intelsat’s solutions can receive global broadband
coverage at a level of service, reach and reliability
unmatched by other HTS offerings without the
need for high levels of capital expenditures on
new equipment.
The high throughput Intelsat EpicNG platform is
designed to exceed the requirements of leading
service providers, enabling throughput in the
range of 25-60 Gbps per satellite, about 10 times
that of traditional satellites and 3 times that of
next-generation Ka-band maritime solutions. For
the maritime sector, each EpicNG spot beam can
deliver total throughput of 290 Mbps to vessels.
For vessel operators, benefits include:
• Maximum broadband performance on a global basis
• IntelsatOne MPLS/IP managed backbone
network linking all Intelsat teleports and
providing vessels with a single IP address
• Confidence that network availability will be superior and independent of weather
• Ability to future-proof their investment
decisions with a flexible, backwards compatible,
open architecture system – they will not be tied
to specific service providers
• System designed with total cost of ownership
as the primary objective
For service providers, benefits include:
• Choice – open architecture means ability to
make hardware decisions based upon end-user
applications and determine Quality of Service
• Greater throughput, for global, consistent
broadband access and the ability to provide
higher levels of service where it is needed most
• Reliability in all weather conditions, meaning
customer network operation centers can focus on running applications rather than on service availability
• Flexibility, with broad beams, spot beams and
IntelsatOne terrestrial services, that provides
an optimal combination of space and ground
assets to capitalize on burgeoning demand for broadband services
Intelsat is the Leading Provider of
Broadband Maritime Solutions
Intelsat provides a satellite-based platform
and terrestrial infrastructure on which service
providers can build their own offerings and add
unique value for end users. Customers will be
able to benefit from Intelsat’s global fleet of
approximately 50 satellites as well as the Intelsat
EpicNG platform. This combination provides the
optimum solution for coverage, throughput,
service delivery and economics.
• Intelsat EpicNG provides game-changing capacity
that is fully integrated with Intelsat’s existing
fleet, maximizing service availability and
reliability and reducing operational risk.
• Combination of wide coverage beams and spot beams enable a total solution that
provides consistent, high-quality connectivity
where it is needed most.
• IntelsatOne services for teleport uplinking, fiber and platform hosting.
• Intelsat is the only operator that can offer an
open architecture design that allows vessel
operators to choose their hardware and service
level alongside simple forward compatibility.
Intelsat Global Infrastructure
Intelsat EpicNG Designed for
Efficient Performance
Building upon the world’s largest satellite network,
Intelsat is deploying a fully integrated, nextgeneration network that will support the needs
of our customers in the future. The backwards
compatible, open architecture Intelsat EpicNG
platform is designed to deliver high performance
and increased efficiency. Because it is fully
integrated with our fully global coverage, virtually
all of Intelsat’s customers will be able to access the
high throughput capacity, positioning them for
operational and business success.
Coverage
EpicNG deploys the greatest amount of capacity
to high-traffic areas where it will be needed most
via narrow spot beams, while still employing
wide beams to cover vast areas with low traffic
densities. Our forward-thinking design uses the
available spectrum to the maximum benefit of our
customers.
Epic is fully integrated with the existing Intelsat
fleet, supporting global coverage from the start
of its deployment. The initial two EpicNG satellites
will add high performance capacity for all of the
populated continents and highly traveled maritime
routes.
NG
Launching in 2016, Intelsat 29e will serve the
Americas and the North Atlantic, while Intelsat
33e will provide coverage of Africa, Europe and Asia. Five additional EpicNG satellites will

provide resilience and connectivity for the busiest
global routes.
All of this means EpicNG provides the most capable network and delivers the most capacity to
the areas of the globe where demand is highest.
Open Architecture for Flexibility
and Choice
Intelsat designed the EpicNG platform with open
architecture, preferred by carrier and enterprisegrade service for enabling highly flexible network
topologies and the ability to customize hardware
choices to the application. Since many customers
already have networks deployed, it is beneficial to
leverage their existing hub and remote hardware.
increased throughput deployed in C-, Ku- or Ka-band frequencies. Our multi-frequency flexibility allows offerings to be customized to
provide the best solution for each application and region. Intelsat has the world’s largest
collection of premier spectral rights. By working
with end users to find the best option for their
needs, Intelsat can provide an optimized network solution.
Frequency Optimized by Application
The approach also allows users to maintain control
of their network topology and business model,
while offering future compatibility thanks to the
open architecture design of Intelsat EpicNG. Intelsat
EpicNG will meet the demand for broadband
connectivity around the globe, enabling delivery
of a greater variety of solutions to more customers
with improved economics.
Intelsat’s EpicNG represents a major design
breakthrough, providing high performance and
