Job Description – Part-time, Sessional Occupational Health Physician
Job Title:
Part-time, sessional, (self-employed) Occupational Health Physician
Accountable to:
Managing Director, Well Travelled Clinics (WTC) Ltd, LSTM.
Clinical responsibility to:
Consultant Occupational Health Physician, WTC
Location:
Well Travelled Clinic, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Liverpool
Salary:
£75,249 to £84,667
Permanent, Part time:
7 hours per week (2 x clinical sessions, between Monday-Wednesday each
week) to fit the needs of the clinic schedules, either 1 x full day or 2 x half
days).
ROLE SUMMARY
 Assist with the delivery of occupational health services for corporate clients of the travel clinic,
providing pre- and post-deployment medical services, occupational and travel risk assessment.
 Carry out occupational health assessment and surveillance services for LSTM employees and its
subsidiaries, and to other external occupational health clients, including sickness and absence
management and ill health retirement.
 Participate in the on-going development and support of Occupational Health Services within Well
Travelled Clinics
MAIN DUTIES:
1.
Provide pre- and post-deployment medical services and occupational and travel risk assessment.
1.1
Carry out pre-deployment medical assessments and visa medicals for corporate clients, including
physical assessments, blood and urine tests and completion of medical reports and visa forms.
1.2
If accreditation approved by Oil and Gas UK and by MCA, carry out gas and oil medicals and MCA
(ENG1) medicals for our corporate clients (following training).
1.3
Undertake comprehensive risk assessments of the pre-travel health needs and immunisation plans
for clients, particularly complicated travellers. Manage own client caseload.
1.4
Offer clinical advice and support to other clinical staff regarding complicated travel itineraries and
for patients with complex medical histories, including telephone support to other Well Travelled
Clinic sites during contracted hours for WTC.
1.5
Administer immunisations and medications in accordance with WTC guidelines.
1.6
Carry out post deployment medical assessment for our corporate clients and liaise with the
Consultant OH Physician and the Tropical Diseases Consultants as appropriate.
1.7
Review and assess post-travel patients who present to the clinic for post-exposure rabies advice or
with febrile illnesses for malaria diagnosis. Liaise with the tropical diseases consultants as
appropriate.
1.8
Liaise with external practitioners as appropriate including; General Practitioners and hospital staff
regarding the treatment and/or admission of patients as appropriate.
1.9
Assist with the development and implementation of best practice guidelines, clinical protocols and
PGDs across WTC, as required.
2.
Health Assessment and Surveillance
2.1
Work closely with the occupational health advisor regarding occupational health assessment and
surveillance services for LSTM employees and its subsidiaries, and to other external occupational
health clients.
2.2
Provide professional advice and support in relation to the implementation of pre-employment
screening and on-going health surveillance for employees.
2.3
Assess the fitness of workers for specific tasks, based on the clinical and occupational history and
clinical signs; understanding of the occupation involved; performance of further clinical
examination; including further tests, as appropriate.
2.4
Analyse data from surveillance programmes using sound epidemiological methods to identify trends
in worker health and recommend any remedial measures necessary to improve worker health.
2.5
Ensure employees have the necessary health information to undertake their work safely, identify
occupational health issues and to improve their own health.
2.6
Recommend suitable adjustments to HR department(s) to enable a person to undertake the work
they have been selected to perform safely and effectively, considering any health issues or
disabilities they may have.
2.7
Assess potential cases of occupational injuries and illness; investigating, managing and reporting
individual cases appropriately to HR department(s). Establish if this is a single case or if there is
wider incidence, give information on other sources of help, making referrals as appropriate.
2.8
Advise employees and employers regarding work-related health issues and statutory reporting of
work related disease, considering relevant HSE legislation, RIDDOR, COSHH and the Equality Act.
2.9
Give appropriate professional advice to HR department(s) in relation to the accommodation of
workers with illness or disability and advise on the relevant statutory responsibilities. Discourage
discrimination in the work place against employees with health problems.
2.10 Case manage workers who are on sick leave, working with other health professionals and HR
department(s) to ensure the earliest return of functional capacity and return to work or
redeployment possibilities and advise HR department(s).
2.11 Recommend suitable alternate work to HR department(s) in circumstances where a worker cannot
perform their normal job, either temporarily or on a permanent basis because of a health problem.
2.12 Give advice on ill-health retirement to HR department(s) where appropriate and assist with the
determination of whether employees satisfy the medical criteria for ill health retirement under the
terms of the relevant pension fund rules.
2.13 Maintain high standards of written documentation, recording information completely and
accurately and ensure occupational clinical health care records (OHCRs) and travel health records
are maintained, stored, transferred and destroyed in accordance with the relevant policies and
procedures.
2.14 Demonstrate an advanced understanding of informed consent and patient confidentiality and
ensure best practice in relation to confidentiality is maintained in accordance with the Access to
Medical Reports Act, (1988).
3. Participate in the on-going development and support of Occupational Health Services within Well
Travelled Clinics
3.1
Participate in the performance monitoring of occupational health services including the provision
of relevant statistics, audit data and reports in relation to occupational health assessment and
surveillance as requested.
3.2
Contribute to external teaching programmes run by Well Travelled Clinics/LSTM regarding Travel
and Occupational Health and Tropical Diseases.
3.3
Participate in the ongoing training and development of occupational and travel nurses in the clinic.
3.4
Adhere to all relevant policies and procedures of Well Travelled Clinics Ltd and/or the Liverpool
School of Tropical Medicine.
3.5
Work within scope of own professional practice and in accordance with your professional body’s
code of conduct. Maintain and improve own knowledge and competence through continuing
professional development.
