play golf. fight cancer.® Central Florida Golf Classic To benefit proton therapy and research To friends of the play golf. fight cancer®. 2012 Tournament The University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute (UFPTI) is changing the way cancer is treated. With its 6th anniversary approaching, there is much to celebrate! Since August 14, 2006, UFPTI has delivered over 125,000 proton treatments to over 3800 patients from 49 states, 17 countries, and 5 continents. UFPTI now ranks third in the number of non-eye treatments given and last year treated more pediatric patients than any other proton facility. Currently, up to 120 patients, including as many as 20 children, are treated each day. This spring, UFPTI added melanoma of the eye and breast cancer to its list of treatment protocols, which already includes prostate cancer, all pediatric solid malignancies, lung cancer, brain tumors, pancreatic cancer, lymphoma, head and neck cancers, and sarcoma. This year UFPTI is also adding new technology--the VERO machine. Although VERO delivers X ray-based intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), it is the first radiation therapy equipment capable of integrated real-time tracking of tumor movement within the body, a function of great interest for increasing precision in radiation oncology in general and one that may be applicable to proton therapy in the future. The UFPTI VERO will be only the second such machine in the United States and will provide a special treatment option for our patients with metastatic and recurrent cancer. Installation began in April and the machine will be ready for patient treatment in October of 2012. play golf. Proceeds from fight cancer® support proton therapy research. Over the past 8 years, more than $850,000 has been raised by PGFC, including $116,000 last year. All net profits have gone directly to support proton therapy research, including the development of clinical research protocols, the development of web-based clinical research tools, the funding of research statisticians, nurses, assistants, study supplies and tests. The goals of the research are to determine the best applications of proton therapy, to develop the best methods for delivering proton therapy, and to generate evidence of superior treatment outcomes with proton therapy. More than 20 clinical research protocols are currently ongoing at UFPTI. In addition, UFPTI is collaborating with other institutions, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, to prove the benefits of proton therapy for preservation of normal brain tissue in childhood brain tumors. The 9th annual play golf. fight cancer® tournament will be held on Monday, October 8, 2012. play golf.fight cancer®. is unique in that our tournament is held in Orlando, supports research at UFPTI, which is located in Jacksonville, but was conceived at the University of Florida in Gainesville!
