Lateral Cutaneous Nerve of
Thigh Block
Procedure Information
The lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh runs down
the outside of the thigh to just above the knee.
On occasions it can become trapped underneath a
ligament in the groin.
This usually presents as pain and pins and needles
in the outer part of the thigh and can be relieved
by injection of some local anaesthetic and steroid in
the upper part of the groin around where the nerve
is irritated.
This is a very simple and quick procedure and usually has few side effects. There is a small chance this
injection may not help. It may take two to six weeks
for the steroid to work.
Occasionally there may be some bruising at the site
of injection and the outer part of the thigh may be
numb until the local anaesthetic wears off. The procedure may need repeating several times to provide
a lasting result.
