The Art of finding the Point
Adv. Math L1
1. Primitive or Undefined terms: Words that are not define and are used to help
define other words. In math these words are point, curve, line and plane
2. Line: two points determine a line. Can be named by any two points contained in
the line. Ex.
Can be called AB, BC, AC, BA, CB, or CA
A
B
C
3. Segment: part of a line. Must be named by the endpoints in any order.
Ex can be called AC or CA
A
B
C
4. Congruent segments: geometric qualities are equal (not measurement).
EX. Comparing segments: AB = BC
5. Equal segments: measure of one segment is the same as the other
Ex. Comparing segments: AB=BC
6. Ray: Half line, which has one endpoint (origin). Name the origin first and then
name any other point in the ray.
EX.
Can be called AB or AC
A
B C
7. Opposite Rays: Two rays that share a common endpoint and point in opposite
directions
8. Collinear points: Points that lie on the same line
9. Plane: 3 noncollinear points determine a plane or two intersecting lines
determine a plane
10. Coplanar: Lines that lie in the same plane
11. Skew Lines: Lines that are not in the same plane. These lines are never
parallel and never intersect.
12. 4 definitions of an angle:
a. Angle: set of points that form the rays the measure between them is the
measure of the angle.
b.
angle: region bounded by two radii and the arc of a circle

c.
angle: difference in direction of two intersecting lines
d. angle: the rotation of a ray about its endpoint
13. Coterminal angles: two angles that have the same initial and terminal sides
14. Vertex: The common endpoint of the two rays of an angle

15. Congruent angles: geometric qualities are equal (not measurement).
EX. comparing angles: < Q = < R or <MQB = <SRT
16. Equal angles: measure of one angle is the same as the other
Ex. comparing angles: m<Q = m<R or m<MQB = m<SRT
17. Straight Angles-formed when two rays have a common endpoint and point in
opposite directions
18. Right Angle-formed when two rays are perpendicular
19. Acute Angles-have measures that are greater than 0o and less than 90o.
20. Obtuse angles-have measures greater than 90o and less than 180o.
21. Supplementary angles-the sum of the measures is 180o.
Adv. Math Geometry Project L1 page 3
22. Complementary angles-the sum of the measures is 90o.
23. Vertical Angles-Two pairs are formed by intersecting lines and the pairs have
equal measures.
24. Tic marks-designates segments or angles have equal measures
25. Equiangular: measures of all angles are equal
26. Isogonic triangle: a triangle in which the measures of at least two angles are
equal
27. Right triangle: one angle if a right angle
28. Acute triangle: all angles have a measure less than 90o.
29. Obtuse triangle: One angle has a measure greater than 90o.
30. Oblique triangle: a triangle that is not a right triangle
31. Equilateral triangle: triangle in which the lengths of all sides are equal
32. Isosceles triangle: a triangle that has at lease two sides of equal length
33. Scalene triangle: all the sides are different lengths
34. Transversal: a line that cuts two parallel lines
35. Postulate: statements assumed true without proof
36. Theorem: statements proven true

The Art of Finding the Point
Date Due:___9/10________
Objective: To communicate your
understanding of basic Geometry Vocabulary
through the use of real life examples and a
digital video camera.
Materials Needed: Handouts, digital video
camera and other material needed.
Overview: Attached is a vocabulary list that will help guide you throughout your
project. You will be working in pairs and this will be worth a test grade.
Day 1: In pairs review the vocabulary list attached. You will be quizzed on some of
these in a few days (it will be announced). The quiz will be fill in the blank. I will give
you the definition and you will provide the terms. After 5 minutes your teacher will
answer any questions you might have concerning the definitions. Your teacher will then
review a few additional topics not included on the vocabulary list. If time you will begin
the scavenger hunt as described below.
Scavenger Hunt: you will be using the video camera to make a creative presentation of
examples that illustrate the following terms from the list. #7, 8, 10-13, 21, 22, 25-34
plus illustrate the following properties:
1. Vertical angles are congruent
2. If parallel lines are cut by a transversal than alternate interior angles are
congruent.
3. If parallel lines are cut by a transversal than corresponding angles are congruent.
4. Find one example where you can measure angles and sides of an angle and
demonstrate that the angle opposite the smallest side is the smallest, the angle
opposite the largest side is the largest and the angle opposite the middle-sized
side has the angle that is in between the largest and smallest. (show
measurements, for example this angle is 23 degrees and the side opposite is 3
feet, next angle is …)
Day 2: Your teacher will review a few concepts from the lesson and your group will
continue with your scavenger hunt.
Scavenger Hunt: Make sure to be creative but also make sure you clearly
understand the meaning of the vocab. Take time to plan your presentation and
clearly identify the vocabulary term you are illustrating. You can use signs, say it
verbally or use digital editing.
