Right Triangles and Trigonometry
Chapter 8 Test
Instructions: You will need a calculator for
some of the problems. Complete all of the
work on binder paper in an organized
manner. Submit your work to the
instructor according to the directions in
Moodle.
1. Find AB. If necessary, give the answer in
simplest radical form.
5. Find ST. Round to the nearest tenth.
6. From a point on the ground 12 feet in
front of the building, the angle of
elevation to the top of the building is 76°.
How tall is the building? Round the
answer to the nearest foot.
2. Find the distance across the pond.
7. To the nearest degree, what is mA?
3. Find sin B as a decimal rounded to the
nearest hundredth.
4. Use a special right triangle to write
cos 45° as a fraction in simplest radical
form.

8. Use a calculator and inverse trigonometric ratios to find the unknown
side lengths and angle measures. Round lengths to the nearest hundredth
and angle measures to the nearest degree.

9. The angle of depression from a plane to the airport is 34°. The pilot reports that the plane’s
altitude is 3200 feet. Complete the diagram, then find the horizontal distance between the
plane and the airport to the nearest foot.
10. An air traffic controller at an airport sights a plane at an angle of elevation of 28°.
The pilot reports that the plane’s altitude is 4500 feet. Draw a diagram to represent the
situation then find the horizontal distance from the control tower to the plane. Round to
the nearest foot.
Zelda, a trapeze artist, stands on a 10-meter-high platform.
11. Zelda measures a 40 angle of depression to
the base of the other platform. Find the distance
between the bases of the platforms to the nearest
tenth of a meter
12. Zelda’s partner, Zev, is on the ground doing a safety
check on the net. Zelda measures a 79 angle of
depression to Zev. Find the distance to the nearest
tenth of a meter from Zev to the base of Zelda’s platform.

14. Find the direction of 3, 4 to the nearest degree.
15. Find the magnitude of PQ with initial point P(4, 7) and terminal point Q(1, 3). Leave the
answer in simplest radical form.
16. The current of a river is given by the vector 4, 2. Find the direction of the vector to the
nearest degree.
XYZ has vertices X(6, 6), Y(6, 3), and Z(1, 3). Complete
Exercises 17-20 to find the side lengths to the nearest
hundredth and the angle measures to the nearest degree.
17. Plot the points and draw XYZ. (Copy and paste this graph or
use your own graph paper.)
