CH10 Exam Review:
1. As a cell grows, problems occur. List three issues with cells that are too large.
DNA overload, obtaining enough food, expelling wastes.
2. What is the process by which a cell divides into two daughter cells?
Cell division
3. What happens to a cell’s DNA when a cell divides?
Each daughter cell receives its own copy of the parent cell’s DNA
4. What are all of the names of the phases in the cell cycle? (all of interphase phases and mitosis phases)
(Interphase)- G1, S, G2 (Mitosis)- Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase
5. When during the cell cycle is a cell’s DNA replicated?
S Phase
6. What happens during interphase?
The cell grows
7. Define cell cycle.
The series of events that cells go through as they grow and divide.
8. What occurs during the G2 phase?
Preparation for mitosis
9. List the phases of mitosis in order. (note: cytokinesis is NOT part of mitosis; but is part of cell division)
Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase
10. What is the role of the spindle during mitosis?
It helps separate the chromosomes
11. What are the two main phases of cell division?
Mitosis and Cytokinesis
12. What is the main difference between cell division in plant cells and animal cells?
Plant cells have a cell plate
13. What happens when cells come into contact with other cells?
They stop growing
14. In eukaryotic cells, the timing of the cell cycle is regulated by what?
Cyclins
15. Cyclins are a family of close related proteins that do what?
Regulate the cell cycle
16. Cancer is a disorder in which some cells have lost the ability to control their what?
Growth rate
17. Cancer cells form masses of cells called what?
Tumors
18. Cancer affects what kinds of organisms?
Multicellular organisms
19. As a cell’s size increases, its ratio of surface area to volume (increases/decreases).
Decreases
20. The process by which a cell divides into two daughter cells is called __________________________.
Cell division
21. Interphase is made up of the three phases called what?
G1, S, G2
22. Define cyclins.
Proteins that regulate the timing of the cell cycle in eukaryotic cells
23. Define cancer.
A disorder in which some of the body’s cells lose the ability to control growth
24. What is the surface area of a perfect cube that has sides that are 2cm long? What is the volume?
Surface Area- 24cm2
Volume- 8cm3
25. Fill out this chart
Phases
What’s Happening
G1
Cell growth
S
DNA replication
G2
Preparation for mitosis
Prophase
The chromatin condenses into chromosomes.
The centrioles separate, and a spindle begins to form.
The nuclear envelope breaks down.
Metaphase
The chromosomes line up across the center of the cell.
Each chromosome is connected to a spindle fiber at its centromere.
Anaphase
The sister chromatids separate into individual chromosomes and are moved
apart.
Telophase
The chromosomes gather at opposite ends of the cell and lose their distinct
shapes. Two new nuclear envelopes will form.
Cytokinesis
The cytoplasm pinches in half. Each daughter cell has an identical set of
duplicate chromosomes.
