Welcome to Coronado School of the Arts!
You were selected to become part of CoSA Technical Theatre because you demonstrated
exceptional talent and passion for your art form. COSA seeks the students with the highest and
best aptitude and attitude to pursue an in-depth study of the arts.
CoSA offers you a unique educational opportunity. It is a pre-professional arts program
that provides a teaching staff of professional artists and classes that prepare you for an arts
education at a college or university, and a career in the arts. CoSA classes are designed to expose
you to and immerse you in the world of the working artist.
The arts have always been a vital and defining factor in human civilization. As a member
of CoSA, you are a force in this creative evolution. By being accepted to CoSA, you have earned
rights, privileges, and opportunities unique to this program. You have the primary responsibility
for learning artistic disciplines, thinking imaginatively, developing your talents, and contributing
your creative energy to others through classroom participation and performances or exhibits.
You have the obligation to use your talents for the betterment of Coronado High School,
Coronado School of the Arts, and the San Diego area.
We look forward to being part of your arts education. Welcome to the 2015-16 year!
CoSA EXPECTATIONS
As a CoSA student, you are training to become a professional. This implies the highest standard
in attitude and respect for your work, and to those with whom you study and train: your instructors,
administrators, and fellow artists. It is our expectation that all students will work hard to earn aboveaverage grades in their CoSA classes. Grades are based on the following:
A) attendance and participation in ALL of your CoSA classes;
B) follow-through and completion of assigned course work;
C) growth and use of acquired skills.
Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA in their non-CoSA classes and a 2.75 in their CoSA classes to
remain eligible for CoSA. Students whose grades fall below this standard will be placed on CoSA
probation and may be subject to removal from CoSA classes and dismissal from the program. If
dismissed from the program, Inter-District Transfer (IDT) students will lose their IDT status, and be
required to return to their home district.
All CoSA classes are factored into the student's overall academic GPA at Coronado High School
and appear on the student’s official CHS transcript. Some courses satisfy the University of California “f”
requirement, and are noted on the conservatory curriculum.
At the end of each semester, students in every conservatory participate in an instructors’ jury, in
which the student presents evidence of technical skills. The first semester jury informs the student of
areas of excellence and areas of weakness to be strengthened; the second semester jury determines
whether the student's progress has been such that the student will be given permission to return to
CoSA for another year’s study.

Guidelines for Using Outside Materials in the Classroom



Students must follow the teacher’s guidance for selection of classroom materials.
Students must follow their teacher’s judgment for exclusion of materials, language or other
factors in a performance or exhibit that may not be deemed appropriate for general audiences.
If the teacher and the CoSA Director agree to include the material in question, the teacher may
recommend: a) special permission slips for students involved in the performance or exhibit, b) a
statement saying the performance or exhibit is only appropriate for mature audiences, which is
included in the promotional materials for the event.
ATTENDANCE
Please refer to the Coronado High School Attendance policies, which can be found online at:
http://chs.coronadousd.net/students-parents/attendance/. CoSA classes are subject to the same
attendance policies as CHS classes. Because all CoSA courses appear on the student’s official Coronado
High School transcript, attendance in CoSA classes is mandatory.
CoSA FAQs about Attendance
What do I do when my student is absent for the day?
Call the CHS attendance office @ (619) 522-8907, then press “1” to leave a message with the
date, nature of absence and other requested information.



Call as early in the day as possible to report an absence. All absences must be called in
within 24 hours. After 24 hours, a student with an unexcused absence is truant.
EACH consecutive day of absence must be excused.
You do not need to call the CoSA office. All attendance records, including CoSA classes,
are managed by the CHS Attendance Clerk.
What do I do when my student is leaving early from school?
Call the CHS attendance office @ (619) 522-8907, press “0” to speak to a person. All early
releases must be called in as early in the day as possible.






A pass will be issued to your student for the time of the appointment.
Teachers cannot release a student from class without this pass.
Students leave through the CHS Front Office until 3:15. After 3:15, students leave via the CoSA
office.
Please do not call the CoSA office if your student is leaving early. The CoSA office cannot
excuse a student to leave early.
If you have an unanticipated request to withdraw your student after 3:15 (i.e. you have not
called it in earlier), call the CoSA office. The CoSA office may not be able to respond immediately
to your request. If it is an emergency, please let the office know.
A request to leave early that is called in after 3:15 must still be called in to 522-8907, ext “1” to
be excused. If it is not called in, it is an unexcused absence.
What do I do when my student has outside activities during CoSA? Students must request release from
CoSA classes through a contract, available in the CoSA office. The parent, coach/director, and CoSA
teacher must sign the contract, and the CoSA Director must approve it. Not all contracts are approved,
and the student is advised to check with the CoSA Director before committing to an outside activity.
The CHS Attendance Clerk records these approved contract absences as excused.
Can my child still perform in a CoSA evening, school-day performance/exhibition if they miss school?
Students must attend at least 4 periods during the Non-CoSA day (defined as periods 0 – 6). Students
who come to school, subsequently become ill and leave school may not participate in a performance or
exhibition. Pre-arranged doctor appointments will not make the student ineligible to perform.
Can my student make up for a non-excused absence that was for an arts-related, off-campus
experience? Students may make up a non-excused arts-related absence with an approved Weekend
Make-up Day. Complete the form, and submit it to the CHS Attendance Clerk within 48 hours of the
absence/event.
CoSA Probation and Dismissal
All CoSA students have talents and abilities that provide them with the opportunity to fully
participate and gain knowledge and skills from the CoSA experience. If a student is not actively engaged
in working to improve her or his skill set, the student will be placed on probation. If the student in
collaboration with CoSA staff is still unable to contribute to and gain from the learning environment,
then he or she will be dismissed from the program.
Probation:




Length of probation may be one to two semesters as determined at the time of the probation.
Student and parent(s)/guardian(s) will meet with the CoSA Director and Conservatory Director
to discuss and acknowledge the reason(s) for probation, the action(s) necessary to be removed
from probation, and consequences of failing to be removed from probation.
While on probation the student may be required to report twice a month to the CoSA Director.
The following are examples of what might cause probation:
 Low grades (see grading policy)
 Receiving 1s and 2s on the Professional Practices Work Ethics Rubric
 Consistent disruptive or negative behavior
 Attendance issues, lack of participation
 Failure to respect and adhere to guidelines
Dismissal:




If a student on probation fails to meet the conditions required to be removed from probation,
the student will be dismissed.
If dismissed from CoSA, Inter-District Transfer (IDT) students will lose their IDT status, and will
be required to return to their home district.
If a student violates the IDT (inter-district transfer) CUSD Terms and Conditions the student will
be dismissed from CoSA and CHS, and will be required to return to their home district.
Parent(s)/guardian(s) will be notified by the Director of CoSA that the dismissal procedure will
be put in action, and will state the last date of participation in CoSA.
