SUBATOMIC PARTICLES are the pieces of an atom.
Protons
• positively charged particles located in the nucleus of
atom
• represented by atomic number
• relative mass of 1
• neutral particles (no charge)
• located in the nucleus
Neutrons
• represented by atomic mass – atomic number
• negatively charged particles travel around the
nucleus
Electrons • relative mass of 1/2000
• represented by atomic number
The number of the protons in an atom determines the name of the
element the atom represents.
