What you should know about Chest CT Lung Cancer Screening

Who should have a lung screening?
Men and women age 55-80 who are current smokers
or quit less than 15 years ago should consider getting
a lung cancer screening. If you meet the criteria of the
National Lung Screening Trial (NLST), you do not need a
doctor’s referral to have this exam. Call our scheduling

physician.

What is a lung screening?
A lung screening is a low-dose (low-radiation) chest CT exam used
to detect early stage lung cancer before signs or symptoms appear.
Why should I have a screening?
An x-ray of the chest can be taken to look for early lung cancer,
but recent medical studies have shown that low-dose CT scans
provide better results. CT scans are able to detect very small
nodules in the lung. Chest CT is especially effective for diagnosing
lung cancer at its earliest, most curable stage.
In 2010, the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) found 20%
fewer lung cancer deaths among participants screened with
low-dose CT compared to those screened with chest X-rays.
Is the exam covered by insurance?
At this time, chest CT lung cancer screenings are not covered
by most insurance companies. Check with your insurance
provider to verify coverage
The cost of a screening is $99. Payment can be made via cash,
check or credit card at the time of your appointment. You are
able to use your health care flexible medical spending account
or medical savings plan to pay for the screening.

What does the screening tell me?
A low-dose chest CT screening may detect lung abnormalities
or nodules that would not otherwise be visible on a chest x-ray.
Many nodules will be non-cancerous and require no treatment.
Some nodules may require follow up with further testing.
What happens after my screening?
After the screening exam, your images will be interpreted by
a board-certified radiologist specializing in body imaging. The
findings will be sent to your healthcare provider, so that they
can review the results with you and determine if any follow up
is needed.

How you should prepare
Wear comfortable clothes without metal fasteners, including
zippers, buttons and snaps.
Arrive 15 minutes early to complete registration.
Bring with you: your appointment form, insurance information
and insurance card, valid photo i.d.
Please let us know if you have allergies to medications, iodine
or x-ray contrast.
