FAITH IN SOMETHING BETTER
Hebrews 11:20-40
Key Verse: 39-40
“These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had
been promised. God had planned something better for us so that only together
with us would they be made perfect.”
1. a) How did Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph keep faith alive in Abraham’s descendants?
(20-22) Background context (Isaac Ge 25:19-34, 27:1-40 | Jacob Ge 48:1-22 |
Jospeh Ge 50:24-25)
20
By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau in regard to their future. 21 By faith Jacob, when he was
dying, blessed each of Joseph's sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff. 22 By faith
Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave
instructions about his bones.

2. Consider the circumstances at the time of Moses birth and the faith of Moses
parents. What might we learn from them as parents about how to view our children
and how to raise them (23, Ex 2:1-10)?
23
By faith Moses' parents hid him for three months after he was born, because they saw he was no
ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king's edict.
Ex 2:1-10 1 Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman, 2 and she became pregnant and
gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. 3 But when
she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then
she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. 4 His sister stood at a
distance to see what would happen to him. 5 Then Pharaoh's daughter went down to the Nile to
bathe, and her attendants were walking along the river bank. She saw the basket among the reeds
and sent her slave girl to get it. 6 She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry
for him. "This is one of the Hebrew babies," she said. 7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh's daughter,
"Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?" 8 "Yes, go," she answered.
And the girl went and got the baby's mother. 9 Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this baby and
nurse him for me, and I will pay you." So the woman took the baby and nursed him. 10 When the child
grew older, she took him to Pharaoh's daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses,
saying, "I drew him out of the water."

3. a) What was Moses’ choice as a young man and how did this reflect his faith in
God’s reward? (24-26) Background context (Ex 2:11-25)
24
By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter.
chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for
a short time. 26 He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of
Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.

b) How could Moses persevere in the midst of hard trials and what does this mean?
(27)
27By
faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king's anger; he persevered because he saw him who is
invisible.

4. c) How did Moses’ faith enable his enslaved people to escape slavery in Egypt and
how does it point to Christ Jesus? (28) Background context (Ex chp.12-14)
28By
faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would
not touch the firstborn of Israel.

5. a) What additional strength did God’s people receive when they believed in God’s
promises? (29-31)
29
By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do
so, they were drowned. 30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the people had marched around them
for seven days. 31 By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with
those who were disobedient.

6. a) What were the highs and lows experienced by God’s people as they continued to
hold on to his promises by faith? (32-37)
32
And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah,
David, Samuel and the prophets, 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and
gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the fury of the flames, and
escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful
in battle and routed foreign armies. 35 Women received back their dead, raised to life again. Others
were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a better resurrection. 36 Some faced
jeers and flogging, while still others were chained and put in prison. 37 They were stoned; they were
sawed in two; they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins,
destitute, persecuted and mistreated--

b) Why wasn’t the world worthy of them? (38)
38
the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and
holes in the ground.

7. a) How was the faith of God’s people exemplary? (39)
39
These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised.

b) How was their faith made perfect only together with us who have been born
again in Christ Jesus? (40; He 7:19, 10:14 )
40 God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made
perfect.
7:19 (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to
God.
10:14 because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
