Social studies : Grade 6 2nd quarter Model answer of the Revision sheet I. Complete the following sentences: 1. AN ECOSYSTEM is a group of trees plants, animals and insects that live together and interact within their natural habitat. 2. All living organisms within an ecosystem stay alive through a process known as A FOOD CHAIN 3. THE FOREST FLOOR is humid and dark, because the higher layers block out the sunlight from reaching the ground. 4. The grass gets eaten by animals such as; DEER which are called HERBIVORES -,but meat eating animals like LIONS are calledCARNIVORES 5. Some ecosystems have dry and warm climate like DESERT ECOSYSTEM ,while others have a wet and humid climate like TROPICAL RAINFOREST 6. The soil in the desert does not contain enough MINERALS and NUTERIENTS for vegetation to grow. 7. CACTUS is the most common type of desert plant, because IT SURVIVES BY HOLDING WATER INSIDE IT FOR LONG PRIOD OF TIME. 8. Dead plants and leaves decay quickly in FOREST FLOOR -layer with the help of decomposers such as; earth worms. 9. The rainforest are divided into four layers-FLOREST FLOOR,UNDERSTORY-,-CANOPY-,and-EMERGENT. 10.The desert landscape is HARSH AND DRY with little naturally growing GRASS. 1 11. The largest rainforest is THE AMAZON RAINFOREST IN BRAZIL. 12. The tropical climate, during-WET SEASON-,it’s common to rain heavily on a daily basis , As for the-DRY SEASON, rainfall does not stop completely but not as heavy as the wet season. 13. --RAINFORESTS-are called “the lungs of the world” because THEIR PLANTS AND TREES PRODUCE OXYGEN ,PEOPLE AND ANIMALS NEED OXYGEN TO BREATHE, 14. Vegetation in the rainforest is layered into levels of height, which are- FLOREST FLOOR,-UNDERSTORY-,-CANOPY-,and-EMERGENT. 15. A food chain starts with the SUN 16. All the plants and shrubs that grow in –FOREST FLOOR-layer have adapted to catch a few sun light. 17. ANACONDAS , SCORPIONS , TURTLES AND CROCODILES are animals that live on the forest floor. 18. Seasons do not change in tropical rainforest , the only element that change is-THE AMOUNT OF RAIN 19. It is common to grow plants that live in UNDERSTORY layer inside your home as houseplants ,because they do not need a lot of sunlight to survive. 20. –A CHICLE -is a substance that is used to make gum. 21. –CANOPY layer is the busiest part of the rainforest , because—A LOT OF ANIMALS ,BIRDS AND INSECTS LIVE UP THERE22. –COCKATOO , TOUCAN , SLOTH AND WOOLLEY MONKEY are animals that live in the canopy layer. 23. –EMERGENT is the highest layer in the rainforest. 2 24. –EAGLES AND PARROTS--are the animals that live in the emergent layer. 25. When people of the rainforest moves to big city, they suffer from -CULTURE SHOCK 26. The uses of the rainforest are---FOOD AND DRINK - MEDICAL BENEFITS – LUNGS OF THE WORLD – PROTECT SOIL FROM EROSION – BALANCES THE TEMPREATURE AROUND THE WORLD 27. The rainforests of the world are in danger, because ofDEFORESTATION 28. Deforestation negatively affects the rainforest in many ways such as; A THREAT TO WILD LIFE: CAUSES A LOT OF ANIMALS AND BIRDS TO LOSE THEIR SHELTER AND FOOD. A THREAT TO INDIGENOUS TRIBES:THIS CAN LEAD TO POVERTY AND LOSS OF LOCAL CULTURE AND TRADITIONS. A THREAT TO NATURE AND CLIMATE: DESERTIFICATION – FLOOD – GLOBAL WARMING. 29. Animals that live in understory layers are—BUTTERFLIES – FROGS SNAKES 31. –RECYCLE SYSTEM--is a very effective method of help preserving our rainforests. 32. -RAINFORESTS---acts as huge sponge to absorb rainwater to stop it from flowing into rivers or seas. 33. Medical Professionals have discovered that some rainforest plants can provide them with chemicals to treat –DIABETES , RHEUMATISM , and INFLAMMATION 34. Deforestation is-CUTTING TREES AND PLANTS. 3 35. ---EMERFENT layer catches the most sunlight, and exposed to the wind ,so that emergent trees have-THICK—and WAXY -leaves that protect them the sun and wind. 36.To save the rainforest ,we have to discourage buying the products that are made from the rainforest creatures such as;REPTILE SKIN , TORTOISE SHELLS , AND IVORY37. Deserts are mainly concentrated in-MIDDLE EAST-and-AFRICA 38. The most famous deserts are SAHARA AND ARABIAN 39. Scientists use an instrument called –SEISMOGRAPH to measure the size of the earthquake and how powerful it was. 40 .TROPICAL RAINFOREST is one of the richest ecosystems, because it’s estimated that-MORE THAN HALF OF THE WORLD’S PLANTS ,ANIMALS AND INSECTS LIVE IN TROPICAL RAINFOREST. 41.Desert climate is usually DRY during the day, but when the sun goes down it can get COLD AND WINDY 42. -BIOMES-are the ways to show the location of the different ecosystems on a map using color-coded zones. 43. RAINFORESTS-are located around the equator in part of SOUTH AMERICA , AFRICA , ASIA AND AUSTRALIA. 44. –CAMELS are considered to be the most well-known animal of the desert, because THEY CAN COPE WITH THE HEAT BECAUSE THEY DON’T SWEAT MUCH,SO THEY DON’T NEED LOTS OF WATER TO SURVIVE. 45. STRATO VOLCANOES are made up of half lava and half pyroclastic material. 46. Camels are used as form of transportation for BEDOUIN TRIBES 4 47. Tourists who visit the desert should be well prepared for the excessive heat and dehydration by-USE SUN PROTECTION CREAM , DRINK PLENTY OF WATER ,WEAR LOOSE AND LIGHT COLORING CLOTHES AND HAS AS WELL. 48. --THE TECTONIC PLATES -are constantly shifting , but when the plates move against each other , they can build up TENSION and PRESSURE-, which cause earthquakes . 49. SHIELD VOLCANOES: -are the largest volcanoes in the world. 50. THE LITHOSPHERE which consists of the crust and the upper mantle , is where the earth’s tectonic plates are found. 51. SHIELD VOLCANOES -are made up of basalt, a generally dark volcanic lava that is made up of silica and rich in iron and magnesium. 52. Shield Volcanoes do not explode like STRATO VOLCANOES 53 . - VULCANIAN ERUPTIONS -are bigger than Strombolian, these eruptions create STRATO VOLCANOES. 54. CINDER CONES are uncommon and formed only by what is called a Strombolian eruption. 55. When the tectonic plates move against each other causing an earthquake, they leave cracks on the earth’s surface which are called FAULTS 56. A fault may move –HORIZONTALLY AND VERTICALLY or both at the same time. 57. The types of Volcanic eruption are AN ICELANDIC ,HAWAIIAN ERUPTION ,STROMBOLIAN ,VULCANIAN ERUPTIONS,AND PELEAN ERUPTIONS. 5 58. Strato volcanoes are prone to MUDSLIDES , LANDSLIDES AND AVALANCHES 59. VOLCANO is a vent in the Earth’s crust that releases some of the following volcanic matter :lava ,ash, gases and pyroclastic flow. 60.- STROMBOLIAN eruption is very little or no lava comes out of it. 61.When an earthquake happens, the energy released from where the earthquake originated ,The ripples of energy are called SEISMIC WAVES. 62.The lithosphere is the name of the place where EARTHQUAKES occurs on the surface of the earth. 63. STRATO VOLCANOES are the most common type of volcano on Earth. 64.Strato volcano makes more gases causing the volcanic vents to GET BLOCKED ,which is why Strato Volcanoes have more EXPLOSIVE eruptions than others. 65.The layers of the earth are- CRUST , MANTLE , INNER CORE AND OUTER CORE 66.- AN ICELANDIC ERUPTION -is the least explosive volcanic eruption. 67-Hawaiian eruption is very similar to - ICELANDIC ERUPTIONS 68- EPICENTER is the point on the Earth's surface that is directly above the focus (the point of origin) of an earthquake ,and underneath is called -HYPOCENTER 69-Compare between the desert ecosystem and the tropical rainforest in terms of (location – climate – vegetation – wildlife) 6 RAINFORST ECOSYSTEM DESERT ECOSYSTEM LOCATION:AROUND THE WORLD ,,IN PART OF SOUTH AMERICA,AFRICA,ASIA AND AUSTRALIA. THE MIDDLE EAST AND AFRICA CLIMATE: RAINY HEAVILY ALL YEAR-TEMPERATURE IS CONSANT………….. THE TROPICAL CLIMATE, DURING WET SEASON-,IT’S COMMON TO RAIN HEAVILY ON A DAILY BASIS , AS FOR THE DRY SEASON, RAINFALL DOES NOT STOP COMPLETELY BUT NOT AS HEAVY AS THE WET SEASON. DRY DURING THE DAY ,BUT COLD AND WINDY WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN. VEGETATION:IT HAS HALF OF THE WORLD’S PLANTS AND TREES (OAK TREES)-VEGETATION ACTS AS A HUGE SPONGE TO ABSORD THE RAIN WAITER – THEY CONSIDERED LUNGS OF THE WORLD DRY WITH LITTLE NATURALLY GROWING GRASS.
