1. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. ISBN-13: 978-0393975420, (Norton Critical
Editions) You must buy a hard copy of this edition so you can make notations in the
book in class.
2. The Death of the Heart by Elizabeth Bowen. ISBN-13: 978-0385720175.
Assignments:
1. For the Jane Eyre text: In the Norton Critical Text and after reading Jane
Eyre, students will read the critical essay, “Jane Eyre: The Temptations of a
motherless woman” by Adrienne Rich.” Students are required to write an
outline explaining Rich’s thesis and argument.
2. Find a comparable critical piece on Death of the Heart and do the same thing.
Bring your essay and outline to class.
3. Choose one of the following questions to answer in a 4 to 6 page typed with
double spaced essay form:
a. Compare the writing aesthetic style of each writer Brontë and Bowen.
b. Compare the two novel’s heroines.
Due Date: The first day of class. Be prepared to share your essay with the class
and you will be graded on this paper.
