Consecutive Integer (and odd and even), Triangle, Hamburger Hot Dog Word Problems
Directions: Do the problems as shown in class in your homework notebook. For each
problem you must define a variable, write an equation and solve the equation. Show all
work.
1. Name three consecutive integers whose sum is 24.
2. Name three consecutive odd integers whose sum is 45. Hints: Consecutive odd
integers are like 3, 5 and 7. Let n = the first integer, n + 2 = second integer and n
+ 4 = third integer. Hence n + n + 2 + n + 4 = 45
3. Name three consecutive even integers whose sum is 66. Hint: You solve this just
like #2. Consecutive even integers are like 2, 4, 6. The second number is two
more than the first. The third number is four more than the first.
4. Name four consecutive odd integers whose sum is 96.
5. The vertex of an isosceles triangle is one-third the measure of the other two
angles. Find all three angles. (An isosceles triangle has at least two equal sides
and angles. Here let n = the vertex angle. The other two angles are each 3n. The
sum of all the angles of any triangle is 180º.
6. In a triangle one angle is three times the measure of the smallest. The third angle
is five times the measure of the smallest. Find all three angles.
7. In a triangle the second angle is 20 more than the first angle. The third angle is
twice the measure of the first angle. Find all three angles.
8. Ryan is selling hamburgers and hot dogs at the school fundraiser. Hamburgers sell
for $3 each. Hot dogs sell for $2 each. A total of 350 items (hamburgers and hot
dogs) were sold. The total money earned was $900. How many hamburgers and
how many hot dogs were sold?
