1-3 MEASURING
SEGMENTS
Distance
• Space between 2 numbers on a number line
• The absolute value of the difference of 2 coordinates
Examples:
Find the distance between 1 and 4.
Find the distance between -2 and 3.
|1  4 || 3 | 3
| 2  3 || 5 | 5
Example
What is ST?

TWAP!
Segment Addition Postulate
• If B is between A and C, then AB + BC = AC
Example: Given RS = 3x, ST = 12 – x, and RT = 24, find x.
R

Example
EF = 34
FG = 25
Congruent Segments
( )
Lengths are equal =
Segments are congruent
(@)
Notice the “tick marks”. That
means they are congruent
Example
Midpoint
• Midpoint – a point that divides a segment into two
congruent segments.
• Segment Bisector – a point, line, ray, or other segment
that intersects a segment at its midpoint
Example
TWAP—(Part “a” is from the last example)
Homework
• Pg. 23-25 # 1 – 4, 8 – 22 all, 37 – 38
