Assignment 1
ZONA Fitness Academy
“List one tonic AND one phasic muscle for each of the following joints”
Shoulder Girdle
Tonic: Upper Trapezius
Phasic: Rhomboids
Glenohumeral Joint
Tonic: Pectoralis Major
Phasic: Infraspinatus
* The table says the Supraspinatus is a phasic muscle, but in the notes it specifies
that it is made up of 60% slow-twitch fibres and functions tonically. Is one of these
an error or does it function as both?
Elbow Joint
Tonic: Bicep Brachii
Phasic: Tricep Brachii
Hip Joint
Tonic: Adductor Group (adductor longus, brevis, magnus, pectineus, gracillis)
Phasic: Gluteus Max/Medius
Knee Joint
Tonic: Hamstrings
Phasic: Rectus Femoris
Ankle Joint
Tonic: Calves (gastrocnemius & soleus)
Phasic: Tibialis Anterior & Fibularis group*
* Same point as above. The notes specify that both muscles are predominant slowtwitch, saying the peroneals function tonically with 63% slow-twitch fibres while
the table at the beginning of the .pdf says otherwise.
