Week 1
Collinear

Two points that lie on the same line are
collinear.
Supplementary Angles

Two angles whose sum equals 180˚
Perpendicular lines

Two lines that intersect at a right angle.
Parallel lines
Two coplanar lines that will never
intersect or are identical
 Parallel lines have the same slope

Vertical Angles

Two angles whose sides form two pairs of
opposite rays
Hypotenuse
The side opposite of the right angle in a
right triangle
 The hypotenuse is the longest side

Proportional

Statement where two ratios are equal
Similar Figures

Figures that have the same shape and all
corresponding dimensions proportional
Square

Four sided polygon with four right angles
and four congruent sides
Rectangle

A four sided polygon with four right
angles
Parallelogram

Four sided polygon with two pairs of
parallel sides
Trapezoid

Four sided polygon with at least one pair
of parallel sides
Radius

The distance from the center of the circle
to any point on the circle
Diameter

Segment containing the center of the
circle whose endpoints are on the circle
Chord

Segment whose endpoints are on a circle
Tangent

Line, segment, or ray that intersects a
circle in exactly one point
Subtended

The angle formed by drawing lines from
the center of the circle to points A and B
is subtended by the arc
Arc

Curved portion of a circle contained
between two points
Polynomial

A monomial or the sum or difference of
two or more monomials.
Real numbers

A number that is either rational or
irrational
Rational numbers
A real number that can be written as a
ratio of two integers.
 In decimal form they are terminating or
repeating.

Irrational numbers
Number that cannot be written as a ratio
of two numbers
 Decimal form are non repeating and non
terminating

Integers

Whole numbers and their opposites
Prime numbers

Numbers that have only two factors,
themselves and 1.
Variable

A symbol usually a letter, that represents
one or more numbers
Coeffiecient

The numerical factor when a term has a
variable
Factor

Number that divides evenly into another
number
Multiple
Pythagorean Theorem
 a2
+ b2 = c2
Area of a Triangle

A = ½ bh
Area of a circle

A = πr2
Circumference of a circle

C = 2πr
Ratio of isosceles right triangle sides
• Angles are 45˚-45˚-90˚, sides are in the ratio
1:1:√2 or x:x:x√2
30-60-90 triangle
• Angles are 30˚-60˚-90˚, sides are in the ratio
1:√3:2 or x:x√3:2x
Slope intercept formula

y=mx+b
◦ m is the slope
◦ b is the y intercept
Slope formula
(y1-y2)
 m= ---------
(x1-x2)

Midpoint formula
 x1+x2/2, y1+y2/2
Distance formula

d = √((x2-x1)2+(y2-y1)2
Equation for a circle
(x-h)2+(y-k)2=r2
 Center of the circle is (h,k)
 r is the radius

Equation for an Ellipse
(x-h)2+(y-k)2
 ----- ----- =1
 a2
b2

Center of the ellipse (h, k)
 2a = horizontal axis width
 2b = vertical axis width

Sine

opposite/hypotenuse
Cosine

adjacent/hypotenuse
Tangent

opposite/adjacent
Cosecant

1/sine
Secant

1/cosine
Cotangent

