Forensic Pathology Service
The Forensic Pathology Service provides forensic

pathology and clinical forensic medicine services to

Government departments. It works closely with the

Hong Kong Police Force and provides professional input

on medico-legal aspects of criminal cases. The Service
is also responsible for the operation and management
of public mortuaries.
Chapter 4 In 2003, some 6 700 post-mortem examinations, 850

examinations were performed.

Laboratory Centre (PHLC) in Shek Kip Mei and the

Clinical Pathology Laboratory Centre (CPLC) in Lek
Yuen, Shatin.
The PHLC is a centralised laboratory for specialities

including clinical and public health microbiology,

mycobacteriology, virology, histopathology and cytology,

and neonatal screening. The CPLC provides centralised

chemical pathology and haematology services.

The clinical and public health microbiology laboratories

provide service for diagnosis and surveillance of various

infectious diseases other than viral infections. The

laboratories perform microbiological examination of

clinical specimens, water, food and dairy products. They

also provide laboratory support for the investigation and
control of infectious disease outbreaks.

The Government Virus Unit is a laboratory for the diagnosis

and surveillance of various viral infections. It conducts

serological monitoring for vaccination programmes and

provides consultative and laboratory services for outbreaks
