The Cow Analogy: Our Classroom Norms
1. What happens in each of the five rounds?
Round 1: Very few, if any, see it straight away
Round 2: Direct instruction works for a few
Round 3: Questioning moves everyone forward
Round 4: Majority sees with direct explanation
Round 5: Everyone sees when helping partner
2. Are you “smarter” than someone if you see the cow first?
3. What is your responsibility when you see the cow?
4. What kind of student will not see the cow?
If you don’t see the cow, don’t leave the room!

Euclid
Euclid (/ˈjuːklɪd/ ewk-lid; Ancient
Greek: Εὐκλείδης Eukleidēs), fl. 300 BC, also known asEuclid
of Alexandria, was a Greek mathematician, often referred to
as the "Father of Geometry". (323–283 BC). His Elements is
one of the most influential works in the history of
mathematics, serving as the main textbook for
teaching mathematics (especially geometry) from the time
of its publication until the late 19th or early 20th century. In
the Elements, Euclid deduced the principles of what is now
called Euclidean geometry from a small set of axioms. Euclid
also wrote works on perspective, conic sections, spherical
geometry, number theory and rigor.

What is an AXIOM or POSTULATE?
"Let the following be postulated":
• "To draw a straight line from any point to any point."
• "To produce [extend] a finite straight line
continuously in a straight line."
• "To describe a circle with any centre and distance
[radius]."
• "That all right angles are equal to one another."
• The parallel postulate: "That, if a straight line falling
on two straight lines make the interior angles on the
same side less than two right angles, the two straight
lines, if produced indefinitely, meet on that side on
which are the angles less than the two right angles."
